He’s apparently a little younger than I am. I have this mental picture of him as being an older version of one those lefty jerk-offs I knew in college. The ones who smoked clove cigarettes and gave themselves nicknames that nobody would ever actually call them. The ones who thought they were being revolutionaries by making fun of the ROTC cadets…behind their backs. The ones who went to the “die-ins” and all that stupid shit hoping to get laid…but never did. The ones who railed against the elitism intrinsic to fraternities and then went to frat parties hoping to get laid…but never did. I bet my version of him is closer to the truth than yours.

Just about every Der Trihs Pit Thread starts off with some reasonably valid criticism, and within a couple of pages there are generally at least a dozen people who manage to make Der Trihs look sane and well-adjusted by comparison. In this thread, it was the OP himself who took first honors in that game, but there have been some other prime contenders.
Seeing as how I’m 69 years old with a very bad back and a sedentary life style, it would be pitiful if he couldn’t. You, on the other hand, had best bring your lunch and a few helpers if you should decide to give it a try.

That’s the beauty of many Internet message boards, one can speak one’s mind, unlike in the real world. Not this one usually though, where most people like DT who have unpopular views and are blunt about it are chased off as “trolls” and “shit-stirrers”. I’m not sure how DT managed to not get banned.
I wonder if someone who had the same views as DT, except from the right, would get banned. (This is not a rhetorical question! I’m actually wondering.) If there was someone who was the opposite of him - who insisted that everybody needs to be Christian, that all non-Christians were idiots and scum, that American troops were heroes and that all the people they kill in the Middle East were savages and deserved to die; would this person be allowed to remain here? And if so, would there be anyone defending him for “speaking his mind” and “being honest” the way some people defend DT?
My guess is no.
Well, yeah, but you were one of 2 people who actually defended Gonzomax in a recent pit thread, so your judgment is a bit, um, suspect. 
(I actually like DT as well…you just have to learn what subjects he can rationally discuss and which one’s he is bat shit crazy on).

And that is that we are Amercians, for the most part, discussing American soldiers and, hence, inclined to a much more forgiving standard. But if these things had happened due to an Elbonian invasion of Gascanistan…an unprovoked attack, justified by lies…and DT denounced Elbonian soldiers as thugs, or at best collaborators…
Would you care much? Or would any of us, for that matter? If you are prepared to accept that there is some bias in his favor due to the political leanings of Dopers, you should also be willing to accept that there is a very strong negative bias, due to his subject matter.
I don’t give a shit about his views - it’s all in how he expresses them, and how he looks down on anyone who disagrees. I resent his description of soldiers being murderers, rapists, thugs, all religious people are delusional and want to enslave everyone, anyone who votes conservative is evil, etc.
