I’ve got a suggestion. Why not only respond to DerTrihs when he post something new? I think his standard response in GD is made with a hot key, Subthreads involving him are pretty much identical no matter what the OP. He doesn’t support atheism at all, not really, since the sanity or insanity, niceness or nastiness of religious people (or atheists) have no bearing at all on the question.
Whether or not religion is rational, responding to the 120th identical post by someone and expecting to get somewhere isn’t. Maybe if he stopped getting a rise out of you he’d be forced to actually think about these things instead of acting emotionally.
Hmm… That’s a notion. The problem with just leaving the rantings alone, though, is that he may further derail the discussion with claims that he has won the point because the faithful can’t answer his charges. (Not a particularly uncommon tactic of some people.)

I will concede that, if I were Christian, Der Trihs would really piss me off. I can’t blame you for being sick of him, although he really is just saying what a lot of atheists think but are too polite to say. I just don’t think you’re the one to go around accusing people of being unable to handle their emotions.
What exactly do a lot of us think but are too polite to say? That atheists are stupid? That they’re diseased? Deranged? Evil? I’m as atheist as they come, and I fight tooth and nail for separation of church and state. I’m also not shy about giving my views on organized religion as a whole, but I draw the line at attacking believers personally for their beliefs alone. I sure as hell don’t believe they’re stupid just for believing, and anyone who does believe that is pretty much an asshole waiting to happen in my book. So 80% of the world is deranged and evil merely for believing in a higher power? What exactly does the world look like from the perspective of Der Trihs?
Well, actually, now that I think about it, it looks pretty damned cool. If I believe that anyone who believes in God is stupid and evil, then that makes me a better person than 80% of the world’s population just by rolling out of bed in the morning. It doesn’t matter how big of a loser Trihs is, or how pathetic he comes across, or how he doesn’t have any friends. In his mind, he’s better than the majority of the world’s population. It actually makes a lot of sense from that perspective. Of course, the downside is that he’s irrepairably alienated from society, and he stops being much use for anything other than posting stupid shit on a message board, but still . . . If that’s how he is anyway, he really doesn’t lose anything by coming to that conclusion.
And is something wrong with high school townies in California? I grew up on the east coast, and I had the ever-living shit beaten out of me by townies in junior high and high school, and you know something? It wasn’t exactly the most fun I ever had, but at least it taught me common sense. I learned how to fight back and how to keep my mouth shut when I had nothing smart to say. Trihs must have had an easier time of it in high school. Maybe they didn’t have football or vo-tech classes at his school. Maybe he just had the crap kicked out of him by the chess club or something.

As long as no one, no matter where they come from, is forcing me to adhere to their belief system, I don’t care if you’re a Pastafarian, a Mullah or the Pope. Believe what you will, just leave me out of that equation.
Or, IOW, you’re using myopic U.S. glasses pointing to a great rift between atheists and religious people, whereas over here in the E.U. most people get along just fine, without perceiving such a rift. It’s just not as polarizing here as it seems to be over on your end of the pond.

Actually, though, there isn’t a point, is there? The assertion that religion is irrational without an argument is a not very humble opinion, not something that can actually be responded to. I don’t think it makes much sense to try to logically refute a metaphor, especially a bad one.
