I think everyone who wants to understand where we are today (totally fucking polarized with one side fucking nuts and the other sane and responsible) should read about this incident:
Further, read about Bleeding Kansas and John Brown:
Sure, we all know that we were polarized before the Civil War, but I think it’s also important to note what forms and with what aesthetic that polarization existed–because it’s very much like the MAGA shit that both Trump and DeSantis and their followers (within government and without) are constantly pulling.
In particular, with respect to abortion, we are getting into a situation on the national level that is very similar to Bleeding Kansas, in which the states have radically different laws and are doing battle over them.
DeSantis and his cronies in Florida are doing everything they can to “own the Libs” = fuck with the North (the Venn diagrams of “North” and “Liberal” have a lot of overlap, of course). Moreover, they are doing as much fucked up shit as they can in order to get the Supreme Court to ratify bad law.
We will soon be in a situation in which the Blue states simply flip the bird to what the Supreme Court says (as they damn well should). I can see that happening soon with Michigan’s new gun law (which requires universal background checks for all gun purchases), in addition to the endless abortion trolling that the RWNJs are engaged in.
I don’t think we’re going to see a hot Civil War this time, but I am fairly sure that our current system of government is not going to survive.
I’m pretty sure death by an 8-4 vote is unconstitutional, but I’m not holding out much hope that it’s going to be a precedent this court feels compelled to honor.
It’s pretty sadistic though for Ron to sign this, and potentially put people to death on flimsy evidence, just so he can utter a sound bite (in that annoying nasal whine of his) about being “tough on crime”
For those with a more visual bent, Extra History just finished a 5-part series on John Brown. In the extra ‘lies’ video where they give the citations and confess errors, omissions, and simplifications, he mentions that, since Brooks broke his walking stick beating down Sumner, hundreds of people sent him a walking stick.
I’d say that’s objectively correct, depending on how you take “mature,” and one of the main reasons he worries me. I still think ancient Biden is better for the country than a bletting DeSantis, but my worry is that the voting public will see Biden’s senescence and react to it by voting against him.
My hope is that the Dems will understand Biden’s senescence and select another candidate for 2024. I would like to see DeSantis - Newsom in 2024. Let these two relatively young politicians duke it out. If DeSantis is a fascist, let Newsom call him out. If Newsom is a socialist, let DeSantis call him out. It’s time for some new blood in US politics. In my opinion.
Oh, I agree. But it’s pretty clear that the Dems will insist on Biden as the nominee, so it will be (barring tragedy) Biden v Whoever, and (per the thread), I think the Whoever has a much greater than zero chance of being DeSantis, in which case he could win the general election.
That said, it’s still a little too early to call. A lot of the strongest candidates at the beginning of these multi-year marathons flame out, and it’s rare for the early frontrunners to be in the lead come Super Tuesday.
They can’t force him—we had a whole war about involuntary servitude. He has expressed his desire to continue in the position. He could change his mind, of course, but unless forced by circumstances as yet unkonwn, is there any reason to think that he would?
I figured that, if he sees he’s not polling as well as another Dem, then he’d (a) stay in long enough to draw fire, and then (b) give his blessing to said other Dem. Wouldn’t you?
Ha ha—I’m so far from the mindset of someone who seeks positions of such power that I can’t even imagine. But it’s not a bad thought, and if so, more power to him!
I still think that the nativist/nasty fever will burn out before destroying the GOP. If Biden was to defeat DeSantis, that might do it. Three problems with that are:
– Nativist/restrictionist immigration polcies are popular, not just in the GOP, but generally.
– DeSantis probably can not win the nomination.
– DeSantis probably could win the general election.
Am I supposed to admit something here? Okay, I’ll admit Kamala Harris was my first choice for 2020, and I would rather see her b***h-slap DeSantis across the debate stage next year. Anything else?
DeSantis is no Admiral Stockdale (Perot running mate whose debate performance really did show wavering voters he wasn’t up to, att least, the top job). DeSantis would stick to his talking points. Debating him would just cement voters into the place they were at that time.
I think what you’ve been missing (and your missing it has confused others in this thread; e.g., the person who asked you how old you are) is that the issue of whether Biden will be the nominee or not has already been decided. Barring death or a serious illness, he’s the one.
If Biden were not running, he would have said so by now. If some other major Democratic political figure were running (and not the couple of cranks who have announced), they would have said so by now.
Re Biden being old and “past his prime”: ya think?!
He’s also incredibly experienced and used to the job. Plus, like any president, he is surrounded by people who help him get things done. Reagan suffered from literal Alzheimer’s in his second term, whereas Biden sometimes seems a little slow and confused. The world didn’t and won’t end.
He’s always been gaffe-prone–even in his prime.
Re the idea that DeSantis can “win” a debate against Biden. Here’s the thing: though Biden makes gaffes and isn’t as quick on the draw as he used to be, he is still a likeable person who can convey what his politics and policies are. He is not a master rhetorician like Obama, but, quite frankly, I prefer a Biden speech to an Obama speech: less ornament, more reality. Biden is likeable and real without really having to try.
DeSantis is a dick and an unlikeable person, and his words reflect his personality. He comes across as having no finesse in either speech or thought–because he doesn’t. He’s not some amazing person or politician who just needs to channel his inner Demosthenes (or Aeschines, lol!). He’s a fucking clod. (I don’t even mean to invalidate the man completely. He seems like a respectable husband and father who could add value in the world–but not as a politician.)
In contrast, even though I hate his fucking guts, Trump is an ingenious public speaker. He’s lost some of his edge, but did you see how he commented on Pence getting booed at the NRA? That’s evil genius at work! Trump channels negativity and hate in a way we haven’t seen since Hitler.
DeSantis can’t do that. He can’t even do the zinger-y clever-ish Ben Shapiro act. He doesn’t have it at all. Nada.
So in a debate with Biden, Biden would be his somewhat plodding but very likeable self and just saying what he means and thinks, whereas DeSantis would be trying to land clever punches but would end up looking like he’s trying too hard and seeming like the dick he is. It wouldn’t go well for him.
Anyone keeping a countdown of when Disney takes their friendly gloves off and turpedoes his 2024 chance and destroys his political career as a Republican?
Been a long time since the Mouse has destroyed someone or another business. Dumbass Desantis thought Iger’s offer of sitting down was Iger conceding. Whoever let this finger pudding eating moron play with grownups?
He should have stuck to being a creepy high school teacher with questionable sexual orientation.
