Because middle Americans are the only true Americans, right? Because only fake Americans live in LA, New York, San Francisco, or Seattle, right? I am so tired of this ridiculous talking point I could just vomit. The contempt Middle America feels towards the edges is just as strong if not more so than that which the Democrats feel towards ‘real, working class’ Middle Americans - I grew up in MOntana, I know how ‘Middle Americans’ feel about the rest of the country and it’s so over-the-top contempt compared to what I feel about them it’s not even funny. It’s the lies that the Middle Americans seem to want to believe that make me hold them in contempt, and the ignorance.
I grew up in Texas and spent the summers in rural Arkansas. My grandfather was a farmer and a pulp wood hauler, and part owner of the local fillin station. he once kicked William Dillards (of Dillard Department store fame) ass in a fight over a girl in High School. He was a hard working, decent man who used to tear into the gas station owners who wouldnt let his black employees use the bathroom (not a healthy stance to take at that time and place). He was a great man but what he knew about world affairs was limited to what he could get on the local news…when he could get the local news.
My other grandfather was a sharecropper, a moonshiner, and musician. He was descended from Cherokee that escaped off of the trail of tears. He was a good guy and I miss him a lot but he knew probably less about how the outside world worked than my other grandfather.
My parents went to college and then became graduate school professors. My father was also a baptist preacher from the time he was 15 years old, and left teaching the seminary when it was taken over by right wing fundie nutjobs.
So I’ve spent a lot of time around well educated folk, and the “middle america” crowd. I have nothing but respect for the people from rural Arkansas…I love the people of Texas I grew up around but they are not the most informed people in the world. It’s not that I have any contempt for any of these people, far from it. They are hard working decent human beings. But I know where they come from and and the Republican party has spent a great deal of money and energy convincing them that liberal media and scientific community is trying to trick them. And they buy it, because they don’t know anything different. Their preachers tell them this, and they were raised to trust their preachers. When you don’t have education to fall back on, and you are cut off from world events then you DO fall back on religion and tradition.
Now that Bricker’s hijack is over lets get back on topic.
Will McCain apologize? Is he too much of a scumbag to own up to his actions? Or does he really believe keeping kids ignorant about what sexual abuse is and how to stop it will make America a better place?
The mind boggles I don’t know how any decent human being could vote for him in good conscience given what a spineless worm he’s turning out to be.
McCain isn’t spineless, he’s simply putting his personal goal (getting elected President) above all other moral or ethical concerns. He’s a sell-out and a whore, not a wimp.

If he doesn’t apologize then he’s either a spineless worm OR actually believes it’s better to leave defenseless little kids being sexually abused in ignorance about what to do about it.
As I said McCain has proven his only goal is to be elected. He’s not compromising on that goal for anything or any one, and is willing to sell out any beliefs he previously held, to the point of selecting an Agent of Intolerance (his words regarding other Religious Right pro-life figures) as his veep.
So I would assume an apology will not be forthcoming, which he will see as reinforcing his goal to get elected through fair means or foul.
I wonder if any private words will be exchanged between Obama and McCain at today’s 9/11 ceremony.

I’ve been trying to track down in this mess what went down. Obama says he doesn’t support explicit sex education - and many on this board will be happy to take him at his word on that.
I was trying to see what he did on the matter - and found that when given the chance to make that explicit - in the legislation mentioned - he didn’t do so. The age appropriate measures were added by floor amendment, not in Obama’s committee. And it does appear that he voted the unamended bill out of committee.
Still, this isn’t nearly as clear cut as it should be for an ad, and McCain should not have made it for that reason.
