I’m not a big DC fan, I must admit, but I do occasionally hear their music on radio and television (how can one avoid it?) and I happened to notice last night a recurring theme in many of their recent hits; to wit:
Say My Name - “You’re a cheating bastard”
Bills Bills Bills - “You’re a scrounging bastard and we’re through”
Independent Women - “I don’t need you; I can buy my own damn stuff”
Survivor - “We’re through, and I don’t need you”
It’s not that I need to hear more cutesie “I wuv you” songs, but this is a disturbing trend. I presume this isn’t representative of their entire oeuvre?
So what’s the deal – is someone having a hard time getting over a bad relationship, or is this just niche marketing?
