WTF, Detroit Project has equated SUV use to terrorism.

“I helped hijack an airplane. I helped blow up a nightclub. So what if it gets 11 miles to the gallon. I gave money to a terrorist training camp in a foreign country. It makes me feel safe. I helped our enemies develop weapons of mass destruction. What if I need to go off-road? Everyone has one. I helped teach kids around the world to hate America. I like to sit up high. I sent our soldiers off to war. Everyone has one. My life, my SUV. I don’t even know how many miles it gets to the gallon.”
WHAT IS YOUR SUV DOING TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY?
DETROIT, AMERICA NEEDS HYBRID CARS NOW.
If gas consumption supports terrorism shouldn’t DP be in the position to halt all use of petroleum product? Whether 5mpg or 30mpg, by DP standards both would support terrorism. Or do they sleep better knowing today they only allowed a terrorist group to buy one grenade while an SUV owner bought a gun.

“This is George. This is the gas that George bought for his SUV. This is the oil company executive that sold the gas that George bought for his SUV. These are the countries where the executive bought the oil, that made the gas that George bought for his SUV. And these are the terrorists who get money from those countries every time George fills up his SUV.”
OIL MONEY SUPPORTS SOME TERRIBLE THINGS. WHAT KIND OF MILAGE DOES YOUR SUV GET? www.thedetroitproject.com
Paid for by The Detroit Project
How about:
This is YEP. This is the orange Yep is eating. This is the tractor trailer that brought the orange to the store that YEP buys his fruit from. This is the oil company the tractor trailer fueled up at. These are the countries that the oil company bought the oil from. And these are the terrorists who get the money from those countries every time YEP eats an orange.
What is next?
I don’t know…I see these less as an attack on SUV drivers, and more as a parody of the Anti-Drug spots that made identical claims about pot-smokers, despite the fact that the vast majority of the marijuana consumed in the US comes from North America. In that light, I find them rather amusing.
If it makes you feel any better, many of the Detroit television stations have refused to air the ads.
It always tickles me pink when people are floored at The Detroit Project or the WWJ Drive campaign. As I have said elsewhere, until SUV’s and Large Trucks are required to meet the same milage and fuel efficiency standards that all “cars” must follow in the States, SUV owners will be supporting terrorism ten times more than any teen (or adult) drug user.
It’s the difference in standards, not the use of gas and oil across the board. 11 mpg vs. 22 mpg (est.).
I agree with the campaign though- I’d love to see more cars using alternative fuel sources, especially if they are reasonably priced.
presidebt,
should cars and SUVs or large trucks have the same standards? They have different uses, whether people know the capablity of their vehicle is another subject. Though I doubt it.
presidebt,
just looked up WWJ drive. Thought it was pretty funny.
DP gets my goat, because it’s going after an american idol. Till this week I had never heard of the DP, so if these ads are a way of putting a spotlight on themselves they’ve done a good job. If their objective is to have america switch to an alternative fuel source fine by me. By tell only SUV uses they are supporting terrorist DP enters the extremists door.
Funny, I never caught a glimpse of Kelly Clarkson in either of those spots.
If all this does is get people thinking about the speciousness of the reasoning behind the spots by the Office of Drug Control Policy (or whatever the office is called), I’ll accept that collateral benefit.
