America has more murders, but thievery of all sorts is much more common in Europe than it is in the US.

In Los Angeles, violent crime has been down for years, but theft is as high as ever.

La Gloria’s Bakery alone is worth the visit. ![]()

Ok that clears it up. I was alway an Eastsider or a Northsider so we rarely ventured over by the Ambassador. And when we wanted to Marco Polo to foreign lands, we always used the tunnel.

Where’s Mexicantown? When I was 20ish we used to go to a lot of run down but really good Mexican restaurants in downtown Deetroit, but I don’t remember any specific place that was called that. (Mexicantown that is).
ETA 8 mile and Gratiot–mmmmmm the ambrosia of White Castle.

That might not be a bad thing. The last time I went to Mexicantown, in about 2002, there was a cat skeleton in the gutter. Not a cat carcass, as that would imply some flesh, maybe fur left over. No, no, it was picked clean by all the other scary critters. Needless to say, it did not make the chimichangas seem all that appetizing.

Yes people, Glorias Bakery really is that good! And as for the dead cat, perhaps you were there on Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead .
The thing about the Mexican Town bakeries – even La Gloria’s – is they can’t make a good bolillo. Sure, they sell bolillos (it’s not all about pastries), but they’re always the same as the supermarket kind: fluffy light with a super-thin, non-crusty crust.
You guys should check out E&L Meats (“El Supermercado”). It’s my regular grocery stop, as it’s got all kinds of goodies that Nino Salvaggio still doesn’t quite always stock.
On Michigan near Livernois, just today, I say another largish looking Mexican grocery store. It’s not Mexican Town proper, but it’s a Mexican area. Any idea what it’s like?
Finally, for really, good authentic Mexican food, stay away from those string of restaurants along Bagley. They’re good, and I particularly like Los Galanes, but head down Vernor, veer to the right onto Dix, and check out Mi Pueblo. They’ve got the best al pastor I’ve ever had in the the 'States.
Just because it comes from Fox doesn’t mean it is a lie, but allow me to use the statistics in my own way with my own secret weightings and I could prove that damn near any city in the world is the most dangerous. So I would just ignore it. Trouble is, most people won’t.

I just stopped in to say that with a just little more effort & some targeted public relations, my home town of Flint can take the title next year.

When Katrina hit and some of the NO homeless were relocated, for some reason that has escaped me, many were moved to Detroit and Flint.
What Detroit and Flint really need are a Catagory 5 hurricane to hit it. Repeatedly.
(Except the yarn shops in each city that I lurve. Everything else is fair game.)
Yes, I spoke to a city social worker about the Katrina victums that were sent to Detroit and she said that they were shell shocked. Not by Katrina, but by the neighnorhoods that the government placed them. At least in New Orleans they knew the gang order. In Detroit they were seen as fresh meat for the established gangs and con men.
