Devin Hester is overrated and other Bears gripes.

That’s coming from a lifelong Bears fan here. He did some great things last year but he has always had a tough time catching kicks and keeping his hands on the ball. Tonight has been his worst game that I can recall. If we start playing him as a real WR it will hurt us more than help us. I’m tired of hearing about him.

Rex Grossman is NOT a terrible quarterback. He is totally psyched out right now buy all the negative press and is getting more and more rattled as the Chi Dal game goes on. I do think we need a new quarterback though. Even if I think he could be a good QB he is just plain old not producing and there aint much you can say to that. And chanting "Greise Greise in Soldier Field is NOT going to make Rex play better Bears fans. Christ.

We need to straighten this crap out ASAP before Urlacher decides to go fight for his ring elsewhere.

Super Bowl Curse strikes again. I thought Seattle broke that string, but nope.
I’m just so sad I wanna… watch the Cubs playoff run. And I’m a SOX fan for Og’s sake!
And what is up with all the groin injuries?

Mike Brown has to come out and say “It’s like we suck”. Hey, it worked in '01.

If Lovie doesn’t put Greise in for the next possession all of Chi will be calling for his head tomorrow.

Urlacher would look better in Honolulu Blue and Silver anyways.

I don’t get it. I don’t get why he won’t put Greise in the game when there is nothing to lose. The game is lost. Are we going to just magically start him at some point after not giving him any play time for the first half of the season?

Hester is a good player. He brings another dimension to the team. He changes the game, and it’s scary to think about the lack of support the Chicago defense would get without him. It’s a crime that a defense this good (tonight’s game not withstanding) has an offense this bad.

The Ravens showed it in 2000 with Dilfer, you don’t even need a good offense to win a Super Bowl if you have a great defense. You need a quarterback that doesn’t make mistakes. The Bears were good in ‘05 with Orton at QB. Some of that had to do with a weak schedule, and being able to sneak up on people. Grossman is not the answer at QB. Florida QBs cannot make the transition to the NFL. (This goes mainly for the Florida QBs out of Spurrier’s offense.) They’re products of the Fun n’ Gun. Those guys get surrounded by a ton of talent, superior game planning, and then line up against over matched competition (in most cases). It doesn’t help that Rex is more worried about his party plans than having the killer instinct and competitive nature a successful NFL QB needs to have.

Now … I don’t like Rex, but everyone is calling for his head. Giving Griese snaps this early in the season in garbage time is not going to help this situation. I don’t know why Smith is so loyal to Rex. What has Grossman ever done to earn that type of loyalty? It’s one thing to stand by your guy, but this is getting ridiculous. Still, if the plan is to stick with Rex, you can’t bring in Griese tonight. Even if the plan is to change directions and go with Griese, I think it would make more sense to have a week to prepare him as the starter. I don’t think Rex is smart enough to respond to Griese being brought in late in the game. He doesn’t seem like the type to step up to the challenge if Smith were to try to send a message by benching him.

Teams get a small window of opportunity when it comes to winning championships. It would be a shame to see the Bears’ window come and go without ever really having a shot because of poor play from Grossman. The rest of the backfield is another story, as I don’t think Benson is all that great either. Get rid of both of them, and get someone that might not be superstars, but aren’t going to lose games by making mistakes.

It’ll be hard for you to convince me that Hester is overrated after his simply unbelievable season last year and his great game last week but, yeah, the Bears suck. Who cares. Cubs magic number is four.

Hester’s problem is that he isn’t big enough to be a true wide-out. As for Grossman, well he just doesn’t appear to be that good.

The defense will keep them in every game but without even a basic offense they have no where to go. Letting Thomas go was probably a mistake as well.

Hester is solid, but some people are acting like he’s going to return a kick for a TD every game- they don’t understand that once a returner reaches his level of notoriety, the other teams are going to spend large amounts of time on how to stop him, and stopping a kick returner can be done, as shown last night.

A few years back I think Dante Hall had four return TD’s in four games, and there was talk of him shattering all records, and he hasn’t had one since.

Now, Lovie Smith’s love affair with Sexy Rexy may end up costing him his job. And John Madden is a goddamned idiot for stating that you stick with Rex because Griese is older and not the long term answer. First, John, you need to worry about this year, not 2011, becasue if you stick with Rex you wont be around in 2011. And second, Rex isn’t the long term answer either- you play Griese if he plays better than Rex, and worry about long term later- a rookie QB in the draft wouldn’t be any farther off than Rex is now.

And for the life of me I can’t understand why a team would spend all the time and energy to gather a Super Bowl type team and try and get a decent QB, like the Ravens refuse to do- I can think of a few marginal backups would are better than Rex- Warner, Leftwich, Culpepper, etc, all of which the Bears could have had- its as stupid as the Eagles going on what ten years now without a serviceable wide receiver threat outside of Owens.

Rex did have a few drops, but also had at least five horrible throws, and has had three straight games with a passer rating under 60. Last year the defense overcame it, this year they aren’t.

…And for the life of me I can’t understand why a team would spend all the time and energy to gather a Super Bowl type team and NOT try and get a decent QB…

Is he well-known as a party boy?

Grossman may not be TERRIBLE but he’s bad enough to drag the team down with him. And as others have said, Hester is a solid player but expecting miracles on a weekly basis just isn’t realistic.

That’s the thing. I don’t expect miracles from him every week, unless you count consistently catching kickoffs/punts as a miracle.

Some people in Philly might think that’s pretty impressive.

I think solid is a bad term to describe him, he’s good and he’s streaky but I wouldn’t call him solid. He did more harm than good last Sunday, where as the week before it was the opposite.

Mmm… sophomore slump?

Part of the value of having someone with Hester’s skills is that the opposing kicker will often go out of his way to avoid kicking it to him – even if that means booting it a bit short. Plus, there’s the extra attention he draws to his side of the field.

His moment of glory in last year’s Super Bowl was one for the ages. I nearly died laughing at those idjit, arrogant Pats! I had **Fight Club ** running through my head: “the first rule in taking on the Chicago Bears is, you don’t kick to Devin Hester… and the second rule is,…”.

The Pats were in the Super Bowl last year? How did they all get tickets?

Looks like Greise may be getting the start sunday against Detroit.

I didn’t follow him at all before he came to Chicago. What’s the word on him? Has he ever been very good?

Hester was unbelievable in Game #2 against the Chiefs. He was personally responsible for 10 of their 20 points, and would’ve had another touchdown on a kickoff return if not for a holding call. Considering how inept their offense has been this year, i don’t see how anyone can call him overrated.

BTW, he now has 8 returns for TDs in 22 games in the NFL, counting the playoffs.

I’m a Pats fan, so have fun with your bitching.
