I keep meaning to share this picture. A few months ago I noticed my sister was wearing a fitted flannel and she looked oddly like Deb. We made a side by side comparison.
no one will come close to motherfucking Doakes. I really miss his character and foul-mouth and everything about him.
Not sure where Joey P gets his “Quinn didn’t like Dexter right off the bat” mentality. To me Quinn likes everyone, he’s the personable guy until you have something on him. Quinn only began to get on Dexter’s case because he was caught taking money from a crime scene which Dexter witnessed and kinda used as a threat to get his reporter girlfriend (Trinity’s daughter) off Deb’s balls about the death of the FBI superstar/boyfriend Lundy.
Me too. It was funny, how when Angel asked for opinions, Deb assumed the money was Maria’s and Quinn (or was it Matsuka?) assumed the money was Angel’s.
It was presumptuous of him to complain to Maria about “hiding” the money, but I get why he was upset. It’s a sign that she’s not sure of him, or their relationship. They didn’t get married because they love each other, but because it was a way out of their predicament.
Joey P, your sister does look like Deb in that photo!
The LaGuerta/Batista stuff is just laughable. It needs to go away. I saw that bar fight coming a mile away.
Wasn’t there already some sort of indiscretion with LaGuerta early in the series? Something doesn’t sit right with me about the idea of this Latina who successfully runs a department not being on the up-and-up.
Lt. VanBuren of the NYPD (Law & Order) kicked ass and took names, and was the up-ist of the uppity of cops. LaGuerta needs to be the minority female hero for the next generation.
I’m not sure if Angel was in the picture yet, but she had a short affair with Miguel (Jimmy Smits). IIRC he was the assistant D.A. and that created a conflict of interest.
When LaGuerta was replaced at the end of season 1 she slept with her replacement’s beau, and supported her replacement’s obsessive behaviour over it, so that the replacement would be fired. LaGuerta also seemed to be trying to ruin Deb’s career by suppressing/taking credit for her accomplishments and blowing her failures out of proportion. She was also hitting on Dexter very overtly despite knowing he had a girlfriend. Throughout the first two seasons she seemed to be a pretty unabashed villain interested only in her own career and basically everyone in homicide hated and feared her. But the writers had her(and everyone in homicide’s opinion of her) have a pretty abrupt about face when they decided to start the relationship with Batista. Which was doubly annoying since the vice cop Batista was seeing was much more interesting and the relationship was ended offscreen between the seasons with nothing but an unnamed extra asking Batista what happened to her and his reply was something weak like “we wanted different things”.
I’ve heard that there may be some sort of cult involved, that’s partially taken from the books though, so I’m not sure how much they’re still using them for inspiration.
That was where I thought they’d be going for this season – the La Muerte-stuff and that young cop knowing all about it seemed to pop out too much to me to be casually resolved and disregarded.
Unless Florida is way different than other states, civil servants, including police and firemen, have an outstanding taxpayer-funded retirement plan that negates the need for your own plan. Here in Ohio, you only have to have 20 years of service in before you can take full retirement benefits, which includes subsidized health care for both you and your spouse, and income equal to 75% of your highest three years of income averaged out, for the rest of your life.
It’s part of the reason that local and state governments are in the fiscal crisis that they are.
Ergo, there’d be no need for LaGuerta to have her own separate retirement account. And it’d be clearly marked as a retirement account.
I thought Batista was completely out of line in this episode. They’ve been married for what? A week and a half? When was she supposed to sit down for a heart to heart and say “honey, guess what? you just hit the jackpot! Sugar momma ahoy!”
That’s what he was expecting, right?
And all that’s predicated on the assumption that she even desires to share this money, which, quite frankly, she’s under no obligation to do and I sure as heck wouldn’t want to just single digit days into my second or third marriage.
And, let’s face it, $300k isn’t an unthinkable sum of money to have saved towards retirement for someone LaGuerta’s age. (I’m assuming she’s in her late 40s.)
Also, we haven’t seen that she has any children, so with her job, she has money to spare. A friend of mine with just one grown self-supporting child saved half her paycheck for years and retired early.
What I don’t get is why that guy in the bar made the “sugar momma” comment. It’s not like Angel is unemployed.
I thought the regular $2,000 contributions to the account were odd. (My 401(k) contributions are some percentage of salary and are an odd amount that varies almost every paycheck.)
Maybe she’s foreseeing the (potential) day when that retirement system collapses and her account is just hedging her bets. I know people that have had their retirement get taken away from them (after retiring even) and they wind up having to start a new career in their 60’s. Not fun.
It could be a lot of things. It might not be a 401K, but rather just a plain old savings account. Even if we assume she get’s said retirement plan, maybe she wants to be able to buy a million dollar house with cash when she retires. Not having a house payment and not making a weekly $2000 savings contribution PLUS having 75% of her old salary will allow her to live pretty nicely…probably considerably better then she was before she retired.
[I’m only saying it like this because I never get to use the word]
“She said that it was her retirement account” From which you inferred it was also her 401K. Who’s to say she doesn’t also 401K. If she’s putting $2000 dollars per payroll period into savings and is up to over a quarter million dollars, I’m guessing she can swing a 401K contribution as well.
But I’m guessing there’s going to be more to this then we realize. I know someone upthread mentioned the possibility of it being a bribe, but each line said “Payroll deposit” so it’s probably not that. Maybe a sick relative who needs surgery…or maybe she’s got a disease that’s going to end up being very expensive to treat (and not allow her to work) that she’s preparing for. I’m guessing something along the lines of the latter. Only because Angel is sooo in love with her, but I think she just sees them as dating.
ETA, this is nitpicky, but it’s also possible she maxes out her 401K and this is the overflow.
The skinner wasn’t really the villain in his season - and if this guy has the same relatively minor role and someone else is the real focus I guess that’d be fine.
