Last week I saw the title of this week’s episode and I planned to censor it (which it now is on IMDB, wasn’t last week) or just call it Surprise if I ended up making the thread for it. But god damn it, Surprise Motherfucker had way more meaning then just what Doakes said when he walked by. Holy fuck shit, I did not expect that ending. I honestly expected either Dexter to get shot (even a non-kill shot) or some other resolution to happen. I did not expect Maria to be off the show. She’s spent every season as the thorn in someone’s side, it’ll be odd to see what happens next year. Also, I’m not sure what they’re going to do about the forensics scene. I have to assume Dexter pulled the bullet out and reshot her with Estrada’s gun. I wonder if that’ll come back to haunt him if someone notices that the bullet is far deeper then it should be.
Couple more things.
Loved Deb jumping when Estrada moved around in the back of the car. I expected it, but it was still funny.
Now something that bugged me. When Maria showed Deb the DVD, couldn’t she have just said “Yeah, I was getting gas, so what”
“Well, this was 2 miles away from the church and 30 minutes before the FD was dispatched”
“I was on my own time, I’m allowed to get gas at any gas station I want on my own time” or “If you must know I was spending the night with a guy on that side of town and we were going to take his jet skis out in the morning but they needed gas”
Something, it just seemed like Deb’s done enough interrogations that she should have been able to weasel out of it. But as an actress, she did a great job looking guilty as hell. I suppose the writers just kinda tossed that scene in as a last minute thing to make sure she was on board with killing Maria at the end. She knew her job was on the line also. On top of that, she’s spend her entire career chasing Maria up the corporate ladder, now she’ll finally have a chance to get past her.
Estrada really died as she lived, being incredibly incompetent at her job. The phone call from Dexter’s victim was an obvious trap, and there wasn’t really any reason for her not to call 9-11 at that point.
Also, I’d think that if a detective dies after requesting a bunch of warrants, the default would to be extra sure those warrants were served instead of just forgetting about them.
Didn’t Lumen know about Dexter’s secret life? He keeps telling Hannah that she’s the only one that knows about him but I thought Lumen does as well.* And I know the writers didn’t forget about her since Deb mentioned her name once this season.
*Also, IIRC Lumen is still alive and well living in the midwest somewhere. Detroit rings a bell, not sure why.
But yeah, that bugged me to. After getting that call, the next call should have been to dispatch “I got a call from Estrada, he said he’s locked in a shipping container at the port, I’m 10 minutes away from there, I want officers there in 2 minutes. Assume there’s an armed and very dangerous assailant in the area block off all exits and have the coast guard come in and to stop boat traffic…no sirens”. Cue dramatic music.
Going in there alone she deserved to get killed. Even if she was right about Dexter being the BHB and she knew he behind this, did she really think he was calling her down there to talk? Also, I pointed the exact same thing out last week when she walked into the container, found the running chainsaw and then sent the uniform away without clearing the container first. Dexter (or whoever) could have been hiding anywhere in there and they had just heard gunshots.
One of the other things that I keep thinking about. I really do love the confidence that Dexter exudes when he gets himself backed into a corner. He prides himself on being able to logic himself out of a jam, but for the past few seasons or at least this season with the Russians he seems to be getting a lot of surprise visits. You’d think at some point he think about carrying a personal firearm.
Even without his dark passenger, I don’t think anyone would fault him for doing so.
1)He works at the police station so he sees them all the time and he’s no doubt very comfortable with them and should be able to get very adequate training.
2)His sister is the Lt and he spends a lot of time with her, it’s not totally unexpected that someone might try to come after him to get to her, especially if they think that him and Harrison are her husband and kid.
3)He’s a lab geek and everyone they arrest sees him and may come after him to attempt to get him to mess with the evidence. I assume in a regular PD the lab wouldn’t be right in the middle of the homicide department.
All those times that Viktor or Trinity or Travis just sort of showed up, I know he talked his way out of those situations, but in reality, even if he still wanted to continue playing cat and mouse with them, having a gun tucked under his shirt would have been some nice insurance.
Anyways, this is just something I think of every time there’s a knock on the door and we know it could be Hannah or Viktor or Trinity coming to kill him, but he just casually answers it, tells them why they can’t kill him right now and schedules a time to meet them later.
It’s going to be very difficult to salvage next season. But I’ll give them a chance assuming it’s the last. It may be time to inject some Joss Cabin in the Woods.
She hadn’t requested them yet, she was getting ready to. I’m sure Dexter took care to take those.
But she was stupid for at least not immediately sharing that video of Deb buying gas with someone, anyone. But I guess she figured people might dismiss the video alone, but once she got the warrants approved based on the video, she’d then drop the damning cell phone evidence like a bomb on all her doubters.
I’ve learned to cut the show a lot of slack on all the improbable/implausible and downright stupid behavior. As a sort of dark comedy, it doesn’t take itself entirely seriously, and neither should we.
My nitpick : When Hannah’s brought into the court room, she’s escorted down the main aisle through the public seating. That never happens. When someone who’s under arrest is brought into court in cuffs, they’re always escorted in from the back of the courtroom - away from the general public. Serious plot hole. The writers need to step it up before this show completely jumps the shark.
There was an IRL case about a year ago where someone was given a guilty verdict, pretended to cry, put something in his mouth and died a few minutes later…I assume it was based on that.
I don’t remember if they figured out how he got whatever it was he put in his mouth.
Right - but by LaGuerta being disgraced due to ‘framing’ dexter and now dead in a shipping container, they will be sent to the circular file by the new Captain. (If Dexter did not destroy that ‘one’ copy already).
They have set it up quite nicely…and I don’t have a clue how this show will end.
Will both Dex and Deb bite the dust? Will they both move to Boca, grow old, live in a retirement home and take care of nasty gardeners and evil nurses at their home? Will they repent and join the Peace Corp?
Michael C. Hall (Dexter) was in Six Feet Under, which had perhaps the best series finale of all time. As executive producer on Dexter, I am sure Mr. Hall has given some thought to how this show should end…so however this ends, I am looking for something rather large and memorable happening.
Slight little footnote for those who missed the snippet after the end of the show - when Deb shot LaGuerta and then ran to her and hugged her, that wasn’t in the script. She was just overcome with emotion and ran and hugged her. They left it in the show.
Angel is almost retired. He’s got a few weeks left. I’m not sure where Matthews is, but I think he’s trying to inch his way into retirement as well. Either pick would be a ‘just when I though I was out’ scenario.
Deb would be cliche/easy, but she’s been climbing the corporate ladder, right on Maria’s heels for as long as we’ve known her, so it might make sense. OTOH, she hasn’t been Lt for very long and honestly isn’t ready to be the Capt.
