Well, if Deb wasn’t fucked up to all holy hell before, she sure as shit will be now.
The writers have done everything in their power to make her character want to go and jump off a bridge and she just gives them the finger and keeps on truckin’.
Anyways, I thought it was a great episode. Every time I was sitting here thinking “C’mon, this is getting kinda slow” it picked right back up and every time I thought to myself “They are gonna do it aren’t they, they had this great cliffhanger from last season and they’re gonna puss out on it” and nope, they finally went though with it. I’m so proud of them, they didn’t take the easy way out. I was really worried that Dexter would come up with a cover story (like he did at the beginning) or he would give her versed or kill her or something along those lines and he would still be the only person who knew…but no, they finally pulled the trigger.
I’m hoping for an awesome season.
Lastly, and I’m going to put this in spoilers because while they said in the show, they spelled it out in the previews
On top of that LaGuerta thinks Doaks is still running around. I’m not sure how that’s going to play out. Is looking for LaGuerta going to point to Dex? Didn’t Maria and Doaks date for a little while? Is that going to be an issue?
Also, when I first saw the slides on the table, I thought that maybe Deb had called LaGuerta and asked her to pull that out of evidence. For some reason I thought she saw Dex drop it before the fire.
Feel free to talk about that out of spoilers, I don’t really care either way.
I’m glad they covered a lot of ground in this episode. They could have made Deb’s discovery take the entire first half of the season had they wanted to with a lot of Dexter voice overs saying “She’s getting closer”/“She’s too close”/“If she get’s any closer I might have to do something drastic”.
Yes, glad they finally went there and didn’t drag this Deb/Dex thing out for the whole season. That last scene, I felt relieved. Breathes fresh air into this show. I’m hoping for a season on par of the first few.
I can’t wait to see how Sobbin’ Deb is going to try and deal with Dex now that the cat’s outta the bag; where this weird thing with the intern, Louis, is going to go; and as for what you discussed in the spoiler box, I think LaGuerta, wanting to believe that Doaks never was the Bay Harbor Butcher, now has a new obsession to figure out who the real BHB is, and who murdered Doaks while also setting him up as the BHB.
I thought the murder-of-the-week weak, but it now appears to be a set-up for some further season-wide complications.
A promising opener for a long overdue, good season. fingers crossed
That makes sense. Like I said, she was dating him right? Or there was some kind of sleepover thing (or was the Sleepover with Jimmy Smits)? Either way, she might attempt to avenge his death. Does she know Pardon My Tits was involved in that mess?
Agreed and good point. Seemed too quick and easy. But Angel and Quinn don’t seem done with the investigation, there’s all these people from Russia and there was a “Special Guest” whose name I didn’t recognize and he’s probably our ‘villain’ for the season. The Russian guy on the phone maybe? Either that or the night club owner?
(checks IMDB)
Here we go…Russian Guy On Phone.
Haven’t seen the new episode yet (I’m actually 2 seasons behind - catching up now), but I’m particularly excited for this season. A guy I know has a nice role on the show this season, and while he hasn’t said anything about it yet, I have a feeling he might end up getting the plastic wrap Dexter treatment at some point. Which would be really, really cool. He’s not “Russian guy on Phone”, but I believe he’s playing one of his henchmen.
As I recall, LaGuerta had been romantically (if casually) involved with Doakes years before the first season, when both were detectives. I can see her working to clear his name.
The ease with which the airport kill (and indeed, the confirmation of the killer’s identity) came together struck me as straining credibility. Taking someone from an airport has got to be the among the most absurdly risky propositions ever, yet the items and rooms Dex needs are all conveniently at hand. I gotta figure someone that compulsive - someone who’d go for such a kill less than two days after getting caught wrapping up a previous one - would be barely functional. He’d be killing people in public and begging to get caught.
Also, Dex’s screen saver has no password? And you can cancel bank accounts and credit cards over the internet, now? Intern boy must have some real mad hacker skillz.
Yes, he does. Remember that he’s an intern by choice, because he’s independently wealthy from his programming skills (which, in TV land, means you’re also a super-genius hacker).
I was blown away by this episode. Like mentioned upthread, I was starting to get an uneasy “are they really going to puss out?!” vibe building during the episode, but holy crap that final reveal was second only to Rita in the bathtub. One of the best episodes of the entire series as far as I’m concerned.
The Getaway (Rita in the Tub)
Hello, Dexter Morgan
The one where Doakes confirms that Dex is the Bay Harbor Butcher (and that Dex hates that name)
Are You…?
Those four are tops in my list, in no particular order.
The name you didn’t recognize is Ray Stevenson, who played one of the main characters on HBO’s Rome. (He was Titus Pullo, partner/henchman to Lucius Vorenus.)
Showtime has a rich history of stealing HBO actors for their best efforts. (eg: the Band of Brothers guy on Homeland.)
Are you sure about your spoilered actress? I know Yvonne Strahovski (Agent Sarah Walker, from Chuck) joins the cast, but haven’t heard a peep about the actress you named.
They seem to be going back and forth between the Dex has no feelings thing and Dex is really bothered when is sister is annoyed with him. But, ultimately, Dex has no feelings.
As for the ease of the killing, they might have ‘phoned that one in’ just to get it done and advance the plot line. But as I’ve said before, 90% of the people watching the show don’t pick it apart scene by scene, they accept it for what it is, then forget about it for 6 days and 23 hours until they hear “Previously..on Dexter”. Maybe a few water cooler chats, but I don’t think I lost credibility in the show. Sure, it all fell into place pretty easily. The target walked into an empty bathroom, there was a wheelchair nearby, an empty room with a giant duffel bag and a surfboard etc…but we’re watching a show about a serial killer that’s been killing for 20 years without anyone even knowing exists.
My issue with this one was that he knew of two killings that this person did, didn’t have any proof, beyond circumstantial and he went all Dexter on the guy. That’s not the Dexter we met in the first season. The guy that hunted his targets for weeks to make sure there were no mistakes. The guy that went after people who fell through the cracks in the justice system.
I can only assume we’re supposed to be meeting him as he’s on a downward spiral and starting to crack. He starting to have real emotions. He’s having real relationships, his sister may or may not be falling for him, he has a kid, he’s been breaking the code all over the place. What’s next, a pet?
I saw her listed on Dexter’s IMDB page and looking at her IMDB page I see her with one Dexter credit. Actually it’s for this episode. So it’s either a mistake, she was in the background somewhere, she was in and cut or she’s going to show up later in the season*.
*This show does tend to credit people for quite a few more episodes then they’re actually in. Yes, I know, lots of crediting rules, but I see it more in this show then others. I always figured that’s to make it harder to see if someone gets killed off.
Liked the episode was bothered by the place Dex chose to kill the cop-killer. He’a too smart to ever do something like that in a place where someone could easily walk in. Yeah there was a hours open sign on the door but employees could access it any time.
He’s been lucky to get away with this stuff in the past. I’d have figured that after getting busted he would get smart and try to be a bit more discreet in his actions.
I did think that was odd as well. I really couldn’t understand why he didn’t wheel him right out to his car. It seemed pretty easy at that point and I don’t think anyone (us, not people in the airport, but them too I guess) would’ve questioned it.
It would have been too risky to wheel him out and risk the airport cameras. But I was like NO WAY, Dexter doesn’t do his jobs in areas that could be easily accessed…an airport baggage room, are you nuts? A murder isn’t necessary in the first episode, IMHO.
THis was a really stupid part of this episode, although should be a compelling season.
Should’ve rolled him aboard, killed him in Bangladesh, then enjoyed a bit of a vacation.
Anyhow, yeh. That (and the suddeness of killing off that cop character) was a bit ridiculous in an otherwise great episode.
Oh, also those syringes were mighty big for a diabetic. I’d imagine airport security sees dozens of insulin-dependent diabetics in a day. Dexter must have a HUGE sweet tooth.
Anyone else notice the guy that Dexter killed and dump in the ocean was wearing a silver bracelet? The same silver bracelet he was careful to remove from the dead stripper in the trunk of his car?
I wonder what is the significance of that bracelet? Will it become a plot point later? Or else why would they shoot the scene with the careful removal from the stripper the way it was shot?
Well, I guess the body will be found and identified by that bracelet. With LaGuerta suspecting the Bay Harbor Butcher is back, she’ll have some reason to check the water, and the chain of improbable coincidence will continue.
