Dexter - 10/28 "The Dark Defender"

There are spoilers here, so if you didn’t watch yet, go away!

What an episode! To my mind the best one of the season. Can’t believe Dexter didn’t slice and dice his mothers surviving murderer.

The view of Lila in the motel room was impressive. Very impressive. Even Dexter seemed to be aroused.

Could anyone tell me what was displayed on the phone text message near the end? Seemed to be from Lila but I’m not sure.

Looking forward to next week.

“When’s the next road trip?”

Ah, that fits right in!!

I liked this episode too. It was the first time I had a sense that Dexter’s sponsor, and the precepts of the program, might be having an effect on him. That scene with his mom’s killer was quite powerful.

Dexter’s getting too relaxed though – he should have taken the boat out to do that blood detecting stuff. The old Dexter would have suspected that the marina might be watched. The old Dexter suspected everything!

Lila’s upper lip is distracting. Do you think she’s had her lips plumped? When you look at her from the side, her upper lip looks funny.

Is this the first we knew that Doakes and Maria have a history?

Me thinks they are setting up that Harry Morgan will in fact be Dexter’s ‘bio dad’ - explains (or atleast adds to) why he worked so hard to keep Dexter safe - and totally ignored Rudy.

Lila’s “you do not have to do this” was about a 1000 times more affective than Harry’s “here, let me show you how to do this and not get caught” approach.

No. The faux ITC taunted her with details about the bust that got her promoted (Doakes went in a building while Maria waited outside, the perp came out the back and Maria just happened to be at that exit, or something). She went to Doakes to ask him if he’d told anyone about the circumstances of the bust. When he confirmed he hadn’t she deduced that the FITC had hacked police firewalls and accessed confidential files.

We just got a new TV and this show looks fricking awesome in HD.

Anyway, I loved the scene with Dexter listening to the tape and the camera swirling around to show him, his mother and Harry at the table.

Rita’s mother’s decision to move in just chilled my soul.

Perhaps a nitpick, but I think the episode you refer to highlighted the prior professional relationship between Maria and Doakes. And that she got the promotion based on luck rather than skill.

I’m pretty sure this episode is the first that hinted at a physical relationship.

And Doakes is extremely skilled at picking up on her tricks. He nailed her for sleeping with the finance of the temp Lt.

Someone on another board thinks that the writers are setting Deb up as a suspect in Dexter’s old murders. I’m not getting that vibe at all. Are you seeing anything like that? She’s too small, for one thing. I suppose a suspicious soul could think that Brian was supposed to be one of her victims and got the better of her. But really – Deb as a serial killer?

But it’d be an interesting twist, if Dexter has to do something to take suspicion off of Deb.

I’d be disappointed if they went this way. Luckily they can’t, we already know Dexter’s father is the dead guy who left him a house–confirmed by the DNA match.

AuntiePam just said “a history.”

I am intrigued by the idea of the character of Lila but I can barely stand Lila. I don’t like the seductress routine and, if she’s not trying to be seductive but instead just parades around in front of her charge with no clothes on then I find that mind-numbingly jaw-droppingly stupid.

I really, really hope they are not laying the groundwork for Harry’s being Dexter’s biological father. I think the whole “Harry lied to me” meme has been sufficiently established that adding paternity to it would just suck.

ETA: Right, I forgot about the old dead guy with the DNA. So that would rule out the Harry’s my daddy business.

Although it’s not like we haven’t seen blood evidence be faked before on this show…

AuntiePam, this quote of yours is from a prior thread. I’m now thinking that Lundy might be interested based on his little share-the-footbath routine in this episode. But I think Deb is feeling better about her gym pal and sees Lundy as a professional mentor.

Can’t say I’d mind being handcuffed to her bed for a while.

Well, you sure wouldn’t be able to take her anywhere, with that mouth of hers.

I’d forgotten that - thanks!

i figure that dexter could get away with the cat defense on the spraying, black light, cleaning thing. he could say he smelled cat “markers” on the boat and have a non-blood explaination.

i always wondered why he hid his blood slide collection. wouldn’t having blood slides be kinda normal for a blood splatter guy? just go with the most interesting cases defense. keep them in work or at home in the open.

I find her lack of boundaries… disturbing, for a NA sponsor. This is the same thing I said last week-- she just gets naked like that in front of him? Is this just the Showtime thing, where they have to show titties every other ep for contractual reasons, or what? Because if she’s not trying to seduce him she sure is going about her sponsorship in a very inappropriate way. And why does Dexter not say anything to her if he’s still committed to Rita? Unless he is interested in her? Which would be very annoying. The seduction, if it’s going to happen, could be done much more subtly and believably than this. Too bad Lila is completely unlikeable.

Last season’s episodes showed Rudy in that shipping container with Dexter and his mother, but last night’s episode showed only Dexter there. (And the mother mentioned needing to pick up the older son at school.) So if Dexter was the only one there, I could see that Harry Morgan would feel responsible for Dexter’s well-being.

And by the way, they mentioned again that the container floor was covered in blood two inches deep. So how many people did they kill anyhow? It’s kind of gory, but I’d think that a whole lot of people would need to be killed to produce that much blood. (There’s something like five pints in an average person, and assuming a ten-foot container, a little quick math indicates that they’d need to have drained 16-17 people to make a puddle that big.)

And did Dexter leave that guy in the bar alive? Couldn’t he be found out as a result?

I’m throwing myself on your mercy… I have been craving a set of episodes of Dexter’s Lab on DVD but nobody sells them except a place in Russia with “craze” in their name that’s probably going to steal my credit card. Is there anyplace semi-legitimate where I can find them?

Up until the end of this one I thought she was addicted to sex or something. It’d explain why she was parading around naked, and it’d also explain why she’s going the seductress route. Ah well.

And yes, Dexter did leave the guy in the bar alive. He’s breathing at the end of the scene. I’m betting he’ll come back to haunt Dexter…along with the boat cleaning, though, as other people have said, there’s no reason Dexter can’t say he goes out the marina every three weeks to clean his boat, or he saw cats around. It’s not like there was any kind of security there, and going at night would be best for the black light.

Dexter’s lab? I think you have the wrong show.
In case you were actually talking about the same show, I’ve seen season 1 DVDs n Target and Barnes and Noble.

Could someone explain this Cat defence thing for me please?

I don’t recall hearing it in show, and I’m not sure how him using Luminol and a Black Light in the middle of the night can be explained away by it.

I’m thinking that it might be that the Cat pee reacts with the Luminol in a similar way to blood, but don’t see how Dexter would be able to justify going out in the middle of the night to check this.
