1)Maybe it’s just be, but it seemed like Astor and Harry acted circles around everyone else. Hopefully the rest of the crew just a had a nice summer vacation and they’ll be back into the swing of things next week.
2)“I did it” From what I remember, there was a mix up that resulted in Rita stopping at home instead of Dexter and that’s how she wound up getting killed. But I’m guessing the FBI and Miami homicide is going to spend a good chunk of the season coming to the conclusion that Dexter is trinity
3)I’m thinking this is the season where Dexter tells Deb what he is. They seem to be foreshadowing it, and I understand that this is what happened in the second book.
4)I think it’s pretty clear, and I think we agreed on this last year that Quinn is the new Doakes. I hope they don’t just recycle the entire season.
2+3+4 Could make things really interesting and will probably get Deb some awards (awards as in Oscars, not medals) if she does a good job with it. She always finds herself “confused” and “betrayed” and “in the middle” and she’s always done a good job with it. She’ll (her acting chops) be put to the test this season I think. Does she turn him in? Does she help him escape the FBI? Does she get him to clean up his act and pretend like it never happened? Does she use him the way Jimmy Smits did?
Great acting from Michael C. Hall, especially at the end there. He looked totally lost without Harry’s (or anyone else’s) guidance.
Quinn is definitely going to be (one of) Dexter’s adversary(ies) this season. Matsuka had the decency to keep his mouth shut, and Quinn’s telling anyone he can about the whole Elliot deal. He has it in for Dexter (for whatever reason).
The Laguerta vs. the World drama was forced and unnecessary (like everything they’ve written for her character in the past two seasons).
I think there’s more to it than that. Doakes investigated Dexter because he thought it was the right thing to do. Quinn’s investigating Dexter because he thinks he can get something out of it, IMO.
Did he say 67 kills at the start? Nice detail, and I was curious as to his count. Very respectable!
I was amused that he killed a guy on his first date with Rita.
I bought that Dexter was getting out of Dodge… until he turned around and went back.
They swapped in a new Rita’s mom. didn’t they?
But I didn’t buy Deb and Quinn suddenly going at it like rabbits in the midst of cleaning up blood spatter.
And aside from Rita’s killing, he seems to have been really sloppy killing the asshole redneck. I wonder if this means tossing the code. I’m thinking his killing is going to really accelerate this season.
Masuka, “I would sometimes imagine her naked, but not like this.” He is Such a perv!
I think that breakdown at the gas stop is the first time I’ve ever seen Dex show any real emotion. Maybe Rita and kids really did start changing him. But after 67 kills it’s a little too late to turn over a new leaf.
He’s always had to get rid of anyone who knew his secrets so it would be interesting if someone he “loved” (Debra or one of the kids) found out the truth. What would he do then?
I was going slightly crazy trying to figure out where I’d seen that funeral director. For a minute I thought it was Carson from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. I was half right. It was Bill Brochtrup, who played a gay man on NYPD Blue. Anyone else remember him from that show? He was awesome.
It’s too bad that Dexter managed to keep his emotions in check. We know how Rita’s death affected him, but those FBI agents and Quinn don’t. And Quinn misinterpreted what Elliott told him. Rita saw the punch as proof of Dexter’s love. Quinn, not knowing the real Dexter, saw it as the typical husband reaction to infidelity.
I didn’t like Dexter killing that jerk in the gas station. Were the writers showing us that Dexter needed to kill to get his head straight? What if the guy had been only mildly obnoxious?
I think the kids need to stay with the grandparents. Dexter’s still experimenting with being a normal person, and it’s not fair to make the kids part of that experiment.
Sorry I don’t know if they changed actors or not, but I couldn’t remember if that was actually Rita’s mom or if it was Paul’s mom, because I thought it was Paul’s parents that took the kids to Disney… Anyone? If it was Paul’s mom, where was Rita’s mom at the funeral, or were they on that bad of terms?
Never really like the Quinn character. I’m thinking he may wind up in the gulf stream by the end of the season.
I’ve been googling around, and consensus is that the grandparents were paternal, Paul’s parents. This would explain how they responded, which was kinda flat, not very affected.
It’s very odd that Rita’s mother wasn’t at the funeral. The actress (JoBeth Williams) isn’t terribly busy, according to IMDB. Maybe Deb didn’t know where to find her, and maybe she’ll show up later. I don’t remember anything about her except that she didn’t like Dexter.
The very first moment of the rather long distance shot of the funeral guy, he looked exactly like Michael C Hall. Dress, build, hairstyle, even posture – I’m sure it was deliberate. Only as they zoomed in and I could begin to discern facial details and hair color could I tell it wasn’t him.
Which reminds me - dammit. I started a thread a few weeks ago about really getting into 6 Feet Under, seeing it for the first time on On Demand. The first 6 shows of the series were available, and I watched them all over a couple of nights. Usually, they take down some episodes every month, and put up the next set, but for some crazy reason they took the series off altogether. Bastards!!
And his first words “I’m sorry for you loss” was something we heard David Fisher say every week (though I’m sure it’s common for all funeral directors to say that).
It would have been really neat if either the interior was similar to Fisher and Sons or they did and exterior shot of the Fisher house (which would probably be out of place in Miami, I assume).
They showed showed Dexter in a small room alone with Rita in a casket. And they showed a but of interior when he and Deb and the funeral director were planning the funeral. I didn’t see anything else that reminded me of the old show, but I’m not real familiar with it… yet.
If you get Chiller, they’re running it there – two episodes a day, I think. However, there are commercial breaks and there’s the usual editing.
And Dexter said “I’m sorry for your loss” to Aster.
Anyone remember if Dexter’s first date with Rita jives (jibes? I never know) with what we saw before? I don’t remember anything about how they first hooked up, and I sure don’t remember that Deb knew her first.
