Dhansak recipes please

I love to cook Indian food, and I usually live off my Madhur Jaffray books. But I have not come across a Dhansak recipe in her work. So recently I bought a discounted curry cookbook, and wonders, it had a dhansak recipe in it. Happy times, I thought.

My questions are essentially two fold.

  1. The recipe calls for red pumpkin. What is this and how easy is it to get hold of. I am in the DC area, so I know of plenty of “ethnic” groceries if need be.

  2. Failing that, does anyone have a good lamb/chicken dhansak recipe they would be willing to share?

There’s one for Chicken Dhansak here that looks pretty good.

Thanks - do you know if that site is generally any good?

No idea, I had a poke around before posting and the recipes looked reasonable, and contained most of the things I expected them to contain.

I don’t think I’d subscribe to the site though.

Oh and if you like Madhur Jaffrey, you might like some of Anjum Anand’s stuff.

Curry House is very good if you want restaurant style curries, as you’d find in the UK (and probably elsewhere for that matter). I’ve made recipes from there before, including the Dhansak, IIRC. If you want more authentic recipes, then I can heartily recommend the book “50 Great Curries of India”.

Oddly enough, 50 Great Curries of India is the book I just bought with the Dhansak recipe in.

I know.

I’m sat behind you

Apparently red pumpkin is a type of squash you’d find in an Asian supermarket. Acorn squash suffices as a substitute.
