Diabetes

I’m not usually a hypochondriac, but I

A new friend and I were talking about health yesterday. He mentioned that he had adult-onset diabetes, but he controls it with diet. He mentioned one of the symptoms that he had, oversleepiness.

I have had unexplainable sleepiness in the middle of the day for a few years now. I thought I was just plain tired and/or bored. But it comes unexpectantly: in the middle of conversations, if I’m not talking I’ll blank out; if I’m not in the conversation at all, I drift off and awake with a start a couple of seconds later. (I’ve gotten in trouble with this, BTW.) I usually get between 6-8 hours of sleep a night, so I didn’t know what to do on that front to get more. (As the father of a 1-year-old, I’m lucky to get that much sometimes.)

After I got home last night, I thought of other symptoms of diabetes that I have heard, and I have some of those as well: excessive thirst, cuts and scrapes that seem to take forever to heal.

Before I see a doctor, I wanted to do investigate a little more and also ask the teeming millions if this sounds like it could be diabetes.

To me (with a little medical education), yes… sounds like it could be diabetes…

Go to a doctor, and find out!

FTR: my father has adult-onset diabetes, and it has little effect on his life (restiricts his diet somewhat, etc.), if he takes care of himself, he has no problems, and no meds.!

I repeat: go to a doctor and find out!

Oh, I plan to. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t being neurotic in my thinking.

Speaking of which, that’s another symptom I forgot about: forgetfullness.

The sleepiness you describe is not really a symptom of Diabetes. Could possibly be sleep apnea. Do you snore, by any chance?

The 1st and most noticable symptom of diabetes is excessive thirst and frequent urination(which means your body is trying to get rid of excess sugar). If you’re going to the bathroom once an hour, you may well have a problem. Other symptoms(for me, anyway) were hunger, night sweats and fatigue.

There are several urine test strips available at your local drug store that can tell you if you have sugar in the urine. But go see the doctor, you’ll save in the long run.

your symptoms of fatigue and forgetfulness are far too non-specific to make it worthwhile trying to diagnose it yourself. You’re certainly free to get a glucose testing kit at the drug store to check your sugar, but while you’re there, better get the screening kit for blood in the colon, in case that’s causing it, might as well do the home test for HIV, as that can cause those symptoms, might as well get the kit to see if you’re ovulating, as hormone surges and falls can give you those two symptoms (check a home pregnancy test while you’re at it), and you may want the home thyroid hormone and cholesterol test kits, too. IOW, get thee to a doc, and let them do the thinking and testing, that’s what you’re paying them for!
