Diamond price question

There is this candle company that claims that every candle contains a real diamond (I won’t name it, but if you have Facebook you have probably seen their adverts). They sell the candles for $30 each, and I asked them what the average diamond in their candles are worth. They replied “$28”. Bear in mind that there are testimonials from people claiming to get $500, $1000, $5000 and even $16000 diamonds which means that for the average to be $28 some people must be getting diamonds worth even less, right? Their website says “Every diamond in our candles is an all-natural, genuine, earth-mined diamond. All of our diamonds are certified by GIA (Gemological Institute Of America). Every candle comes with a diamond that is at least 0.03 carats. All diamonds sized less than 0.25 carats are batch certified by GIA .”
Assuming they are being truthful-

  1. What kind of diamond can you get for $28?
  2. If the diamond is worth $28 and the candle sells for 30…where is the profit?

I’m guessing a lot of “industrial grade” diamonds, which are useful for drill bits and such, but ain’t gonna look purty in a ring.

I’m not sad to say that, despite lots of FB’ing, including membership in a few candle-making groups, I have yet to come across this one.

If I start seeing ads for them anytime soon, though, I’m blaming YOU O.P.

They didn’t say they paid an average of $28. So long as someone somewhere has paid $28 for the average diamond, they can semi-truthfully say it’s worth $28.

Yeah, but let us just assume that the diamond I get is worth about $28 in today’s market. How big would it be?

I cannot answer what kind of diamond you get for $28. Call De Beer.

But saying that the average candle has a diamond that on is average worth $28 leaves a lot of wriggle room.
1000 candles
1 diamond worth $16K
1 worth $8K
998 diamonds worth four bucks each = $2k profit or 6.666…% profit margin.
Not great, but sell enough candles…
It’s almost like a lottery, and I think the regulators in my country would strike it down as such.

I tried to Google $28 diamonds…and now I know all about 28 carat diamonds and $28,000,000 diamonds.
Thanks for assist, Google!

Or, you know, you could have googled 0.03 carat diamonds and got tons of information.

So it is a diamond around 0.07 inch across, weighing around 6 milligrams.

And they can be bought for less than $20.

And their candles (which you refused to name for some reason but made utterly googleable thanks to the quoted text) list for over $100 each.

From their Unicorn Poop page:

Every Candle comes with a .03CT diamond in the candle and a chance to win the following:

¼ tcw earrings valued at $300

A diamond of approximately 1/3 ct valued at approximately $500

A diamond approximately 1 ct valued at approximately $3,000

A diamond approximately valued at $12,000 (Size will vary depending on Market at time of winning)

Also, apparently candles with stuff stuffed in them is a whole product category.

  1. I don’t know where you got that “list for over $100” info. Some do, most don’t.
  2. Yeah, I could have googled 0.03ct diamonds that list for under $20 if that was what I asked in the OP…but it wasn’t, so I didn’t.
  3. I didn’t give their name because I didn’t want to give them any more free advertising, and it wasn’t necessary to answer the questions i asked.

What you asked in the OP was “What kind of diamond can you get for $28?”. And the page you quoted said that their diamonds started at 0.03 carats. And what kind of diamond sells for $28 or less? A 0.03 carat one.

From right here:

That link goes to a sample page that goes from $29.95 up to $99.99, and if you look at their full product line you can get diamonds in candles that cost as little as $14.95.

Yep, it sure was.

No, it goes to a page with the candles at a clearance sale price from their much higher original prices of over $100 each.

Apparently their entire collection is on a “Mega Sale” for up to 80% off(let me know if that sale ever ends, o.k.?), so at most that $14.95 candle that is guaranteed to have a diamond in it was selling for, at most, approximately $18.75. If I got the math wrong, let me know.

For an idea if they really ever weren’t “on sale”, they have an Amazon storefront, and it looks like the cheapest ones there are $40.

If they are certified by the GIA they are of gemstone quality and not industrial.

If. The minimum size it will certify is 0.15 ct.

Then, there’s what grade. A D VVS1 diamond is worth a lot more than a U I2 diamond independent of the size and how well it has been cut.

Enough free advertising for that company, please?
Basic question- What kind of diamond can I get for $28?

Let’s take them at their word for the purpose of this thread.
