Wouldn’t want to rush an important decision like that. Should form a committee to explore the options, hold some hearings on the matter. No unseemly haste.
Hang on, if his “gay lover” was his wife, that would make his wife gay. And if his wife was gay, then wouldn’t that mean that he was a she…
Oh my aching head.
No, Michael Ellis, she would be a beard.
Don’t forget, Dick Armey is the same guy who got caught a few years back talking about the congressman from Massachusettes Barney Fag. Truly a hateful human being.
Hmmm… Ottto, let me see here. There is probably no mandatory ground for giving tax money to the survivors of those killed in any national disaster, no matter how heroic their actions were. However, the overwhelming response of our nation has been to honor those who fell trying to save others by giving some sort of compensation to their family, by which one may understand those near and dear to them, to whom they were related by blood or marriage.
As you may or may not be aware, 49 states do not permit any legal relationship between two gay people to be established, no matter how much their intended commitment to each other resembles the ideal of what marriage is. For some obscure reason, the requirements of the United States Constitution as to the requirements of such states to honor such a legally binding commitment in the one state which does permit such a commitment to be made has been suspended by an act of Congress termed the “Defense of Marriage Act.”
At least one of the people named in this law is believed to have been among the three people who jumped the terrorists on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania (instead of into the Capitol or White House) as a result of their actions. His life partner, to whom he considered himself “married” in the eyes of God if not the laws of the country, is ineligible for benefits under law as it currently exists. I might point out that John McCain, hardly a radical activist for gays, stated at the ceremonies honoring this man that he considered that he, McCain, owed his own survival to the man’s heroism.
Fr. Judge, who was celibate but moderately out about his orientation being gay, was a Friar Minor*, and as such was not entitled to hold any possessions beyond the necessities of life in his own right; any benefits he might obtain from such a law would pass, not to the Catholic Church as a whole, but to the Franciscan order to which he belonged.
Tell me, Ottto, in all of this, where do you see “our tax money” going to “a gay lover” in the sense I hear being suggested by your post – i.e., to a casual sex partner. If that was not your point, kindly clarify why you do not believe that any person killed should be honored by a gift by our nation to the person he or she considered a spouse. I can (barely)see where libertarian grounds might suggest that such a gift would not be proper.
And you can guess my opinion of Dick Armey, based on this and an almost unending series of moves aimed at appealing to the bigoted minority that seems to be all that the right wing of the Republican Party cares to think of any more.
- I’m not sure whether he was Observant, Capuchin, or what, but he was part of O.F.M.
I have heard the recording of this statement, and it’s not clear whether or not Armey intended this interpretation. It’s possible that his accent made it sound that way. He has never admitted that he meant to say “Fag.”
By, the way, I finally saw The Coconuts last weekend, so my response to Why a Duck is, why a fence?
December, I will allow that as an outside possibility, knowing that the media are fond of picking up on apparent faux pas of that sort (Murphy Brown and the regret that one did not learn Latin in high school in order to be able to converse with Latin Americans, anyone?).
But my impression from Mr. Congressman Armey’s combative style and social attitudes is that the likelihood that he was misunderstood is about the same as that Happyheathen will shortly announce that he has seen the error of his ways and entered the Society of Jesus, or that Esprix will begin to promote the virtues of Exodus International.
Oh no! We’re not gonna go all through that again!
In terms of our buddy Dick, how can we forget the alleged conversation between Dick and Dave Barry at the Republican convention in 2000:
Here we fucking go again. Wishing death to those who have views different from your own. This is particularly vile. You, Kirkland1244, are a pathetic, inhuman asshole.

Dick army? I’d sign up…
Esprix
He’s simply had some very good teachers.
Actually I am curious- back in Dec. 00 when Gore conceded the SCOTUS decision, a poster here said that he was disappointed, that he had hoped that Gore’s concession would be an event ala Bud Dwyer. Did he incur your Beerish wrath?- I haven’t been able to find the thread.
JDM
Found it! And UncleBeer does indeed refrain from scolding the conservative death-wisher. Of course, that remark was different, being about Algore…
JDM
Firstly, I wish to take a moment to distance myself from any remarks which might be construed, however distantly, as reflecting anything but humble admiration for Our Moderators, who sit at the right hand of Cecil. *(Grovel, grovel, cringe.) *
Secondly, I would not wish death on Dick Armey. The vision that would fulfill my soul would be to see him covered with Old Testament boils, with frogs frothing out of his pockets like amphibian green Alka-Seltzer. Not only would the Republic be served, but the grace of a just and loving God would be made manifest. I would instantly repair to the nearest accredited House of Worship to offer hymns of praise.
And would that make him curse God and die? Or perchance learn how to bind the sweet influences of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Will it make him abhor himself, and repent in sackcloth and ashes?
I wonder if UncleBeer will also go on record as reproving the ineffable Cecil for similar thoughts about President Reagan.
Actually IIRC the media didn’t just pick it up; it was fed to them and touted by the Dems. However, it is certainly possible that Armey did mean to make an obnoxious, childish insult.
JDM, your Ann Coulter cite misses a crucial distinction. John Walker Lind arguably committed treason – which can be punishable by death. Dick Armey arguably commited homphobia. Kirkland1244’s call for him to receive anthrax-infected letters is about as childish as calling the Mass. Congressman “Barney Fag.”
So can I wish hot death on hateful, disgusting, and truly evil people if they share some of my views?
Looks like I am going to have to become a conservative for a few minutes then.
As a former resident of his district, I have to ask “Must I choose only one?”
If ever there were someone for whom their name was more appropriate!
So you’re saying we should piss on him?
