Aside: He died in Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. I remember reading a short story that referenced St. John’s (probably not by name). I think it was called The Place Where Movie Stars Go To Die. I wish I could remember the actual name of it.
That’s my favorite Dick Van Patten quote. This being the Dope, I’m sure I don’t even need to cite its source. Also, I guess 86 was enough! Ha! First! (No disrespect to Mr. Van Patten. RIP, sir.)
When you say “actual name”, you don’t mean the actual actual name, i.e., St. John’s, but the actual monicker for it used by the article you read?
One of my favorite roles he played was in Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety. I laugh every time I see him trying to kick the car windows because the radio’s so loud.
I’d like to remember the actual name of the short story I read. It could have been The Place Where Movie Stars Go To Die, or it might have been The Place Where Celebrities Go To Die. I do remember that it started with The Place Where, and ended with Go To Die. I can’t remember the ‘who’.
Dick Van Patten enjoyed playing the horses. I grew up near Belmont Park race track, and there was an Italian restaurant in our neighborhood where my parents caught a glimpse of him a couple of times.
I enjoyed DVP in every role he played that I caught over the years. My dogs also love his dog food, even my elderly one who had stomach cancer and is incredibly difficult to feed without digestive issues. Natural Balance food really works for him.
When I read that someone named [Marguerite Patten](Marguerite Patten) died a few days ago, I had to look to see if she was a member of the Van Patten acting clan; which made me wonder if Dick Van Patten was still alive.
…making him yet another celebrity I’ve accidentally killed by thinking about just before he died.
I, too, am somewhat disappointed this was not titled “86 is enough”.
He’s probably best know for “Eight is Enough” but he was pretty ubiquitous throughout the '70’s and '80’s. I think my favorite roles of his would be in the Mel Brooks movies, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I also got a kick out of his “appearance” in an episode of Family Guy where he voiced the father in Eight who slapped the shit out of one of his daughters until he was reminded by another daughter that Eight (slaps) is enough.
Also, I feed my cats his Natural Balance cat food.
OMG! What a blow! He was just one of the finest TV actors ever seen in his hometown of Peoria IL.
We are all very sad to see him go. Most people will never know just how many good works this man performed during his life. He was truly a very decent man and so many of us will feel this loss for many years to come. Yes indeed.
