I can remember when I was a child, I had to sneak over to my New Zealand freinds house in the afternoon to watch this martial arts robot battle the evil ape monster on a daily basis. This show was to violent and totally forbiden in my household. I loved it and am very nostalgic for it. It was a poorly dubbed Japanese language show that was apparently filmed only for one year at the time I was born. If you have heard of Ultraman, it is in a similar vein to that. Also I think the Power Rangers are derivative of it.
“Power…from space…he will save…the human race…Yet they’ll never know the face of SPECTREMAN!”
Yep…used to watch it all the time. Still got the damn theme song stuck in my head.
The intro, in case you haven’t already looked it up.
Overlord…Karras…Dr. Gorri…monsters spawned from pollution…ah, good memories…
That is so going on my iPod. They have a full episode up there in parts. I can’t wait to watch it.

Great, now I have the stupid specterman song stuck in my head. I have to sing “Power…from space…he will save…the human race…it’s SPECTREMAN!”
For the next week!
Thanks puly
For some reason, they ran episodes of that the one year I lived in Albuquerque, in the Early 80’s. I liked it for the insights into Japanese culture.
OK so clearly I’m old. I know that. Yet it’s obvious that Spectreman and Ultraman (never really watched that one.) were the predececors to the Power Rangers. I’ve never watched the Power Rangers, how derivative are their plots.
What I can’t get over is that apparently Spectreman was only filmed for just over a year at the time I was born. I had no idea he was that old. By the time I was watching him, he must’ve been in reruns for 10 years.
I was just watching the episode thats on youtube. I still kind of like it in a kitch sort of way. It’s pretty funny really. I’m almost tempted to get the DVD set. I never did see how the series ended, but I know that he gave away his identity as he left.
I really wish somebody would make a modern Spectreman movie. That would be so cool.
Yea this is a bit of a bump, but since it’s clearly such a rare interest I’d like to make sure that everybody that remembers this bit of history gets a chance to see it before the thread dies.
