Whoo hoo! Omg, omg, omg, omg, omg… (trailer)
This is going to be sooooo cool. This was my favorite growing up when I was 5 or 6 years old. Just bought the whole series on DVD. Anyone else a fan of the old show?

I liked the one episode where a giant monster attacks, then the space-rangers (or whoever they were) went to battle it, only to find their cool ship and weapons couldn’t stop it. The one space-ranger, who was secretly Ultra-Man, sneaks off, transforms and does battle with the monster. After a short battle, the light on his chest started blinking, which meant he was low on energy and had to transform back soon. Somehow he defeats the monster at the last second, transforms back into the space-ranger, and rejoins his crew, who were none the wiser.
Remember that one?
(and yeah, I was a *total *sucker for this show when I was a kid)
Meh, I think the time is ripe for a big-screen treatment of Automan.
gtfo!
SCIENCE PATROL.
Heh heh heh! That was also the one where the monster steps on a paper building!
The trailer looks great though. It has the same monsters, Ultraman looks perfect, SFX are the same old classic mixes, but the buildings are no longer paper! When I was a kid, I pretended I was Hyata all the time.
Huh. Not really. I thought it was about a goofball member of the Science Patrol, which flew around in really cool rocket-copters, dropping umbrellas to each other when it started to rain. (Remember THAT one?)
I watched maybe a dozen eps when I was 10 or so. After that, every time I caught an episode, it was the one about the big hollow silver ball thing. (Looked like a cross between a cactus and a soccer ball, had probes stick out and zap the U-man…)
In a city in a country where giant radioactive mutant lizards frequently erupt out of the ground and indulge in cataclysmically destructive judo bouts with giant mechanized robots, it seems kind of pointless to be wearing a gauze surgical mask. And yet, in the crowd scene at the beginning, some young lady is doing so.
You have so got to be kidding.
I hope it’s in Japanese and then dubbed with English. Whenever they bowed, saying “hai!”, you’d hear a nasally American say, “Yes, sir!” Classic!
Well, they did keep the seam up Ultraman’s back (although the zipper is a little more hidden), so maybe they’ll dub voices too.
I thought when the light on his chest started blinking then he had to fly up to the sun to recharge. But my memory may be a little fuzzy 40 years later.
Looks like a fan/college project film. Slightly better technical values wrapped around an episode just as cheesy as 1975.
Hot ddamn, I love Daikaiju!
ETA: Oh yeah, Ultraman is cool too…
EATA: Seriously that trailer was pretty cool. If they can just avoid what made the most recent Godzilla movie suck, i.e. not having lots of fight scenes involving giant monsters and aliens and things, this looks like it could a lot of fun.
Science Patrol! Thanks Bup!
I didn’t watch the trailer before. I want this now. I used to love Godzilla flicks, but maybe because I’ve seen so many over the years, and the reboots have sucked, this has me much more - well, not excited, but interested - than any Godzilla flick could.
And I think the film needs a balance: Too many monster battles can be almost as bad as too few. You need the the build-up, you need to care about the characters and the outcome. It has to be a good movie, in other words.
I didn’t think a giant monster movie could interest me anymore. Thought I was too old. Maybe I just missed seeing GOOD ones.
You may want to check out THIS WIKI ENTRY . There have already been a couple dozen Ultraman movies and at least that many series, some of them very, very cool.
If you’re a fan of the original, like me, you would probably enjoy the ‘Ultraman Max’ series from several years back, which is basically a modern-day reboot of the original - they also managed to get Susumu Kurobe (Hayata) and Hiroko Sakurai (Fuji) from the original into this as part of the regular cast, and the rest of the original cast in guest shots here and there.
Another good one is ‘Ultraman Mebius’ from the year after Max - this is set in the main Ultraman universe, also has guest spots from almost everywhere and lots of call outs to the history, and is very well done. Original Ultraman makes an appearance in more than one episode, as do the other Ultra Brothers.
Enjoy! There’s a lot of stuff out there!
I remember an episode where the monster was actually an astronaut who’d crash landed on a strange planet and then been abandoned there. Somehow he survived, but the planet (plants he ate? radiation? I don’t remember) transformed him into a monster as he managed to cobble together a craft that could get him home. That was what he wanted, was to get home and to get revenge. And he got home and to everyone there he was a monster. I was very sad for that poor monster (I was also 8 or 9).
Are they going to have that clogged toilet flushing or whatever it was at the beginning? Just won’t seem the same without that.
