Did anyone else find Chicago painful??

Sorry if this subject has been done…but I just saw the movie with my husband. All I can say is that if it weren’t for the big vat of buttered popcorn I was shoving into my mouth throughout the movie I would have walked out. Of course, I realize now I could have taken the popcorn with me…darn it!

The only scenes I found even mildly entertaining were the ones with Catherine Zeta Jones in them. Queen Lativa’s (Latifa?) number was really well done I thought. Maybe it was that squinty eyed, whiny Rene Zellwegger that irritated me. I don’t know. Urrgh, and Richard Gere…I should have known better!!:smack:

Movie rule Number 115: If it has Richard Gere in it, you’re going to be empathizing with small, tailed rodents before it’s through.

I also didn’t like it. Mrs. KVS went ga-ga over it.

Just one of those marriage disagreements, I guess.

I enjoyed it. It’s not a “drop dead gotta see it a million times” film but it certainly has it’s good points. I enjoyed the song & dance numbers for their production value. I also am not a big Renee Zellweger fan so I kind of glazed over her scenes.

Loved the play. Loved the movie. Want the DVD NOW!

Loved it…and I’m definitely not the demographic they were going after. The wife and I have seen it twice, bought the soundtrack, and plan on buying the DVD.

Stunning.

If you found it “painful”, then I suggest you stay away from my house the day the DVD comes out. And probably for a couple weeks afterwards, too.

“Give 'em the old Razzle Dazzle”

I loved every single second!!! My husband and I also bought the soundtrack, saw it twice and will definatly be picking up the DVD asap.

the trailers were enough for me.
not even going to bother seeing that movie.

can’t stand both lead actresses, and Gere, well…
pfffff…

I didn’t find it painful…but it really didn’t do much for me either…the best I could say about it was that I liked the way they didn’t even try to contain the musical numbers in the dramatic flow…each was set off by an overt introduction or other break. I found that refreshing, but it only got me through the first 20 minutes of the movie.

I’ve never liked the play so I’ve shied away from the movie.

This was the first year I ever made any effort to see all the big Oscar nominees, and thanks to Chicago and the even more execrable Gangs of New York, it will be the last. New rule: No matter how many nominations something gets, if it smells bad, skip it.

I despised damn near every character in the movie, some of the songs were just not all that interesting, but I got to see Catherine Zeta Jones.

Plus, I saw the movie for free. It was worth free.

Well, obviously some people did, but not me. I enjoyed it all the way through, and I’ll see metroshane and Homebrew in line when the DVD comes out.

BTW, I usually detest Gere, this is only the second movie I’ve liked him in (the other was Primal Instinct.) I’ve never been a fan of Zeta-Jones, either. But all is forgiven.

I thought this was the worst pile of dreck since Ishtar. I could not even watch it all. Like BlackKnight, I despised everyone and everything about the movie. I walked out and went to Spirited Away instead, which was a pretty good little movie.

Saw it only because it was going to win Best Picture. I am not a big musical theater fan, so I neither love it nor hate it. Now, I know it’s a musical and the songs themselves were fine, but I expected some well, acting and dialogue in between the dance numbers. Grease and The Sound if Music are both musicals, and both had plenty of plot & acting between the songs. I thought that the movie was basically one show number tacked onto the end of another. Maybe this was what the stage production was like as well. So much hoopla was made about the lead actors being able to sing and dance and all I can think is “Hey, musical theater actors do all of that every single day.”

I think Skammer just set a new record for interim between double-posts.

I loved it but I can see why some people don’t. Especially Zellweger. I liked her in Chicago but I get irritated watching her do interviews or talk shows, she always looks like she is about to cry.

Zeta-Jones was great, loved her. Gere was better than I expected, and I loved, loved, loved John C. Reilly ( a very underrated actor - he was also good in The Hours).

I spend the first few numbers thinking “Do the voices sound wimpy? Or am I just having a bad evening?” Then Queen Latifah sang and my question was answered–those other folks tried hard, but they’re just not singers!

I found the film mildly amusing. Nothing to write home about but no big excitement either. Best movie of the year? Humph.

Catherine Z-J has never impressed me–except by singing while 8 1/2 months pregnant at the Oscars!–and Chicago is no exception.

I agree that Renee has a squinty look. What’s up with that? Someone should tell her to open her darn eyes!

FallenAngel–are there other movie rules we should know about??? Don’t post all 100+, but give us some of your favorites, if you please.
