Ok, I watched it last night. Overall, I liked the show and will try hard to make it a regular.
What I Liked
-
Shalhoub’s OCD
I don’t know anyone with OCD but I found his character’s affliction tragically funny.
-
The Defective Detective Remark
Corny but effective.
-
The Ass-Kissing Guy
I don’t remember his name but he had big ears. He had a line that went somthing along the lines of, “He’s half the cop you are, sir, and a third of the man.” That was so bad I had to laugh
-
The Mayoral Candidate’s Wife
Who the hell dresses like that? She’s so unreal and gave me someone to loathe that I liked her as a part of the show. I loved her remark about Monk not being able to work in this town again when her hubby gets elected mayor.
-
Excuse Me
The sniper guy actually said, “Excuse me” as he passed a panic-y Monk on the fire escape. I loved it!
-
Monk Cock Blocks
When Monk tells Sherona her date is lying to her and outlines the reasons. Classic.
What I Disliked
*Sherona and Her Son
Ugggh.
- The Case
The murder mystery itself was bad, bad, bad. Shalhoub’s OCD can’t support the show alone. The show needs strong mysteries to survive.
I look forward to learning more about Shalhoub’s late wife. I suspect he’ll solve that mystery in some two-parter.
I’m with Cervaise, he made this case a long time ago. I first noticed him as the poor non-English speaking cab driver in the very funny Quick Change (“honk honk”). Big Night, which is a showcase for him and Stanley Tucci, is a must-see for any Tony Shalhoub fan.
Another Shalhoub trivia bit: he’s married to Brooke Adams (Days of Heaven, The Dead Zone, Gas Food Lodging). She hasn’t done a lot in the last decade, but has an upcoming project called Made-Up, written by her sister Lynne and directed by Tony.
It’s billed as a “comedy/drama” (it’s a mocumentary) and the description at IMDB says “A look at how our cultural obsession with youthful good looks affects women who are told their value is dependent on their appearance”.
My Tivo has a Season Pass set for Monk, but I’m waiting to watch it until hubby comes home from a business trip. I’m glad to see that others are enjoying it.
I also loved the murderer passing Monk on the fire escape. My wife loved the waving dead guy. She contendes it was the best funeral scene since Mary Tyler Moore’s “Death of Peanuts the Clown.”
Nitpick: It was Chuckles the Clown. I also loved the waving dead guy.
I liked the part with the shoes. When Monk mentioned that the cop’s shoes were scuffed, I immediately said, “So were his!” right before Monk said it about the suspect’s shoes.
I hope we see more of this. I like being able to figure it out with him.
