After the Chile earthquake earlier today, I had heard the entire Pacific ocean was under a Tsuanmi warning. And although I saw a map of the tidal wave’s projected path enguling the Pacific, did CA actually experience a Tsunami today?
Yup. It hit Santa Monica.
It was measured at 2.1 feet.
Dammit, Rick! I was just about to link your post!
Two feet doesn’t seem very threatening…unless they’ve developed smack-up to the coast, perhaps? Also, does the energy wave dissipate as it moves away from the point of origin? I mean, would Hawaii perhaps see a 1-ft wave…practically invisible to the norm?
The energy both dissipates and spreads out (two different phenomena), both of which would tend, all things being equal, to make the amplitude decrease with distance from the source. But of course all things aren’t equal: The amplitude of a tsunami wave depends heavily on the depth and shape of the sea floor, and the shape and orientation of the coastline. So it’s still possible that Japan, say, might see a bigger wave than California did.
Well, I drove through the so-called “tsunami zone” in Playa del Rey (south of Santa Monica) today, and I didn’t see any tsunamis. Disappointing, really.
Yeah I was waiting to go surfing down Santa Monica Blvd out in front of my dealership*
*Santa Monica proper is a couple of hundred feet above sea level with a big assed cliff right behind the beach.
