8.2 earthquake, 6-foot tsunami off Chilean coast

Tsunami warning for West Coast of South America.

USGS is not sure if Tsunami was generated, but I would guess there is a pretty good chance.

Look out West Coasters and Hawaiians.
Edit…now revised to an 8.2 Magnitude

Yes, believe it or not, CNN is mentioning something other than the Malaysian plane crash. Hope this was in an unpopulated area.

Reported to merge threads with this one.

I think there are Dopers in the Tsunami warning/watch zones. Hope everyone is inland/elevated, and stays safe.
Updated…most of the watch areas are cancelled.

A TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR

CHILE / PERU

WARNING AND WATCH FOR ALL PREVIOUSLY NAMED AREAS ARE
CANCELLED
Existing warning is calling for a few feet (up to 7ish) of water. With a little force behind it, that can be pretty dangerous.

There’s actually quite a dense population near the coast. Worried about a couple of friends in southern Peru now.

In the link above, the person reporting is actually in Rio and the anchor mentions that but a few moments later, he is warning her to be careful and stay safe. Oops.

In all fairness, she should make it a point to be careful and stay safe in Rio.

Could be a delayed cause and effect. They’ll find plane fragments when the tsunami retreats.

It’s back to the plane crash now though they did lead their 7:00 AM news hour with the quake and not the airplane.

True. Quite true.
