I heard that California recently passed laws banning from the state Pit Bulls, or Rotwilers, or both dogs, I can’t remember which. Did I hear right? If so, how are they going to ban those dogs? Dissallow new sales and purchases? I doubt they would take them from current owners.
In a word, no.
Don’t you think that if the largest state in the country banned two very prominent dog breeds, you would have heard about it somewhere?
How would the state enforce the law?
Now if you have a dog, any dog, that is declared a hazard to humans, the Animal Control people will confiscate it and destroy it, but they could do that with a cat or a hamster if they wanted to.
Some cities are trying to ban the dog breeds.

Of course not…some woman just took the place in back of me and she has a huge Rot…so big the girl nextdoor doesn’t like going outside.
No, but those pits should be. I know all about good dogs, bad owners, blah blah. The fact is the good majority of PB owners in general buy them because of what they are and raise them accordingly. Vicious dogs. Bred to attack and hang on. Not to be the family pet.
A woman was recently admitted to our ICU who’d had both of her legs chewn completely off by her daughter’s pit bulls. And she was not a stranger to these dogs at all- she saw them and played with them every day.
My son was attacked by my next door neighbor’s pit bull when he was two. Again, we knew this dog very well and it had never shown any aggression. CHOMP CHOMP, two bites (it would have chomped his neck next if we hadn’t been right there) and my baby got 20 stitches in his face. The dog died of old age just last week.
My sister-in-law recently bought two pit bulls and has decided to breed them. My kids will no longer be allowed at her house. Ironically, she also keeps several very small children in her home day care business. I suggested to her that she put a big sign in her yard that says, “Pit Bulls and child care! Cheap daily rates!”
Thanks for the posts. Sounds like we need to close this thread and make a new one in the BBQ Pit or Great Debates about, “Pit Bulls and Rottweilers, friend or foe?”.
Moderator, what do you think?
I’ve seen any number of horror stories on the news about pit bulls, but never about Rottweilers. Are they supposed to be all that dangerous? All the ones I’ve met seemed to be pretty mellow. (Loud, though.) They’re very popular around here.
Ya know George, I agree. Now that we know it is not against the law to have Pits and Rotts, The Pit (no pun intended) is probably a perfect place for this hot hot subject.
The people up the block from my parents have a big Rottweiler. Very tame, but very large. This dog has carried around a basketball in his mouth, without puncturing it. He has also torn big parts off a retaining wall made of railroad ties, and brought them to his master as if fetching a stick.
The animal has never bitten anyone, nor even knocked someone down. The only trouble they have with it is when it gets stubborn, and sits outside when they want it to come in. Its master is the only one who can make it move, and that mostly by a tug-of-war; the man used to play professional football, and it’s nearly an even match.
I can’t resist throwing in a Rottweiler story here. A couple of years ago in my town, a Rot (a pet with no history of viciousness) attacked a little girl and ripped her scalp and both her ears entirely off. Her neighbor brought it (the scalp) to the ER in a bowl of ice, but the doctors were unable to reattach it. The little girl underwent many surgeries to graft skin onto her bare skull and to try to make some semblance of ears for her, but she is tragically mutilated.
I created a topic in the Great Debates forum called “Pit bulls and Rottweilers: pets or predators?” Let’s continue this discussion there.

BobT, “Don’t you think that if the largest state in the country banned two very prominent dog breeds, you would have heard about it somewhere?”
I did hear about it, but I heard wrong. Calif did enact a Dangerous Dog Law, but it is not breed specific:

“How would the state enforce the law?”
The same way Britain and France do. They banned pit bulls and other dangerous dogs:
