I totally agree with you on this statement. When I was in the 6th grade - in 1973, in Mobile, Alabama - our “biology” teacher, who was also a Baptist preacher, refused to teach evolution in his class at all. He said that we could read the section of the text book if we wanted, but he didn’t believe it and he wouldn’t teach it, nor test us on it. It really pissed me off, even then, and pissed off my parents even more, but, ultimately, we were not able to effect any change (though the teacher in question did retire shortly thereafter).
Another thing this guy did was to have us copy, word for word, articles from the reference books he had in class, as busy work, whenever we had finished whatever we were doing for that day. He didn’t even take them up for checking to see if we were actually doing it or not. I am reminded of the immortal words of Bugs Bunny: “What a maroon.”
