Did I dream this commercial?

I think it’s a real commercial, but it’s so ridiculous that I’m really not sure: a focus group of women are shown two picture of a guy. In one picture there’s a big truck behind him, in the other a regular car. The women are asked to pick the guy to whom they are most attracted, and since it is (I think) a commercial for trucks, they choose that picture. Was this real, or a skit/spoof?

It’s real. Really stupid, too.

Real commercial. There’s also a version where they ask a focus group of bearded men what kind of facial hair truck guy would have (“mutton chops”) and how he’d shake your hand.

And one where kids talk about what kind of pet he’d have.

I of course have no idea what type of truck it was for.

If they are real people, all that commercial proves to me is that they are stupid.

Meh. Yeah it’s stupid, most commercials are. But I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to find that it was effective. Remember it’s aimed at the guys (this is why you only see the ‘pretty’ girls’ opinions!)

It’s for the Chevy Colorado.

Sorry IvoryTowerDenizen, I didn’t see your link.
And it was a Super Bowl ad, btw.

Wasn’t a dream. It was a Nightmare! :vampire or monster face smiley:

It only really proves how good people are at sucking up when they see a camera pointed at their face. Yes, they are real people, but they know who they are there for. They know which one they are supposed to be praising.

It’s a dumb ad. I do think it’s supposed to feel tongue in cheek, but I don’t think it quite manages to pull that off. Probably because the car maker deep down really does want us to believe that people think those things about men who drive trucks.

It comes across as being a hair’s breadth away from saying, “Cars are for queers. Buy this truck to prove you aren’t one.”

When I saw that commercial, my first thought was: Are they so stupid they can’t see it’s the same guy??? My second thought tends towards: If you’re judging me by the vehicle I drive, I’m pretty sure I don’t care about your opinion.
Stoopit ad.

I see this idiotic commercial every day. It angers me to an uncomfortable extent.

I would pick a sweet baby blue VW Beetle by a bird-owning metrosexual over some goober with a truck ANY DAY. You want to thump yr chest dicking around in the boonies with a truck, go do that. You live in the suburbs or the city, you look like a dork driving a big honkin’ pickup truck around.

I really don’t see why everyone is so aghast at this commercial. Is it really that surprising for superficial images to effect people’s ‘top of their head’ opinions?! This is what 100% of advertising is all about.

I know plenty of people, men & women, who do in fact believe exactly this!

Please don’t tell me about the mud flaps.

Not a great commercial, but I took it to be a bit more tongue-in-cheek than how you all seem to be.

Don’t necessarily blame the people in the focus groups. They were probably sitting there for an hour with the guy asking various questions. Then the advertisers went back and cherry picked the best quotes.

“And drink Miller Lite just to be sure.”

I didn’t realize it’s supposed to be tongue in cheek :smack: Although, considering the stupid feedback the ladies give, I should have known it had to be a joke. Actually the only reason it ever caught my notice is that whenever I’ve had (joking) conversations about men and their vehicles’ of choice, I’m more of an antitruck gal (not really; my boyfriend drives a truck. But I *kind of *wish he didn’t).

It is/was basically in Isuzu. I guess with the stupid commercials they are doing a hail-mary to do something about sharply falling sales.
