Did I get some bad cheese?

I recently started to try to expand my horizons a little and started trying new cheeses. I’ve found some I really liked and some, well, not so much.

But recently I was quite surprised and disappointed in one of my choices. I like blue cheese and have fallen in love with Maytag, so decided I explore a little. Over at the local Whole Foods store I ran across a Danish Blue called Castello. It was pitched as being “Extra creamy and mild. A good choice for those new to blue cheeses”.

So, I plop down $8.00 for a little wedge and hurry home to try my new found treasure….
blech!

As opposed to being creamy it was very gritty. It was not at all mild but the blue veins in particular had a bitter and metallic taste.

So did I get a bad piece of cheese or an I just a slug with an uneducated palette

I don’t know Castello, but what you say doesn’t sound good.
What I did come here to say, is that you can ask to taste cheeses at Whole Food before buying. (Don’t abuse this though).
I find the Alsacian Munster whole foods gets is excellent, and check out their Neal’s Yard Dairy cheeses.

Blue Castello is a learner blue cheese. It is mild. I have fed it to my 17 month old daughter.

You got a bad piece.

Why, is Blue Castello cheap? I wait for the reduced stock Lighthouse Blue Brie from King Island and the Jindi Chili Brie which I could eat by the kilo.

I was afraid of that but in all honesty, not having tried it before I was nervous about bringing it back. I had vision of some snobby cheese monger looking down his nose at me and loudly deriding me for not knowing that “this is what Castello SHOULD taste like”. :o
