Did I pay for a floor model? (long)

Nobody else is amazed by that fact that someone would pay $3000 for a set of chairs?

Huh? Quality furniture costs big money–especially with good leather upholstery.

I can’t afford $3000 for chairs, but if I could spend that much, I would. Good quality furniture pays itsef off in years of comfort and good looks.

Yep, I was. I was going to say that assuming they are the same construction (not sure given what Scylla said) and any wear was unnoticeable, and that you can afford $3000 chairs, why quibble over a small refund. But then I felt petty and envious so I shut up.

oops.

Green Bean I know good furniture costs good money. I paid $1500 three years ago for leather couch/loveseat/recliner set. I have three rugrats under 7 years old and a brother tipping the scales over 200 pounds flopping on these things all the time. Not to mention the numerous guests filtering through the house. They were white when I bought them and they’re still white now, and look just as good as when we brought them home. I’m a big cheapskate though, and don’t care as much about a name as I do about getting a good quality deal.

I’d take that one step further and say that even low quality furniture costs big money. And in my experience, stores that sell $1500 chairs frequently do have children acting like little monsters in them. Though I do agree that life in my house is far more dificult for furniture than any showroom, and all without kids or pets.

As for my response to the OP: you asked for 20% and they gave you 15%. If that’s enough then the fact that the salesman lied shouldn’t matter.

Actually I spoke to my furniture guy and I misconstrued what he said. Generally the quality is consistent throughout a brand, and rarely do you see furniture intended solely for promo quality.

My bad.

I was surprised that anyone would pay the amount listed on the price tag!

Let’s go back in time – you have two chairs, floor models that have been sitting out for who know how long, from a line which has been discontinued. Would you ever pay full price for those? She should be getting 30% off, at least! I’m with Scylla, send them back.

I would send them back immediately. Besides the fact that the place you bought them from lied to you and practiced terrible business, you will be constantly reminded of your anger when looking at or sitting in those chairs.

You’re supposed to furnish your home with things that make you feel good.

Most of the companies that I worked with in the furniture buisness (Rowe, Universal,Lane,Broyhill,Basset,Ashley to name a few)do not generally have floor models and retail models. Also in a lot of furniture stores what you get is the floor model.Warehousing costs a lot of money and unless you have room for a big inventory, you generally buy one or two sofa sets in a given style, put one on the floor and one in storage. The ones in storage go out first. If the sofa style is really popular you usually will get a new sofa.By time a popular sofa is discontinued it might have been on the floor for over a year.If that’s the case you should get a floor model discount, because the item wiill most likely have a little visible wear. But for a sofa, chair etc. that’s only been on the floor for a month or two it’s unlikely(unless dealing with a major chain) that you will always get a new item. Most stores I’ve worked with work the above way, and would only tell you the item you see is the one you are getting unless you ask.

I totally agree that the salesperson was a lying idjot. He should have been upfront when you called. It sounds like he was lying because he didn’t want to lose any of his commission if you decided to send the chairs back.
