Did I miss an appointment?

I’ve been seeing a therapist for the last two years. For the last eight months, my appointment has been at five o’clock every other Monday. At the end of each session, he’ll ask me if I want to see him in two weeks at the same time and I’ll usually say yes (probably 98% of the time.)
So , I had to cancel my last appointment two weeks ago. I never called to make an appointment for today and he never called to confirm…until five ten today.
What do you think, did I miss an appointment? This isn’t just academic; a missed appointment will cost me an additional ninety dollars.
Opinions please.

Thanks in advance - DESK

I’d say no. If your therapist asks you every time if you’d like an appointment then I assume it’s written into his book right then. Since you weren’t asked there was no confirmation for him to write it in.

It’s fine for therapists to give their regular patients standing appointments, but he needs to inform you first. And not like this.

Also, today was a holiday for many people. You might say that you assumed he wasn’t seeing patients today.

Thanks for the input so far. Pretty much how I see it. He was presumptuous and assumed I wanted my “usual” appointment but at no time sought confirmation.
I left a message stating that I was unaware that an appointment was scheduled for today. As I told Mrs. Top, if he asked for his missed appointment fee, I can go all “anxious” on his ass. It’s stupid, but since I’m seeing him for anxiety attacks, WE thought it was funny.

No, I don’t think you were at fault. However, when your therapist called you (if you weren’t otherwise tied up), you did have the opportunity to ask if you could do a phone session instead.

Knowing that you had an almost standing appointment, it probably would have been a good idea to have talked to the therapist and schedule something. ( I don’t know if I can explain this right–it’s early) Basically, if it is unusual for you to skip sessions for a whole month, I’m surprised neither you nor the therapist called to get on the same page regarding your hiatus.
