I’m a seventh generation Alabamian hillbilly. When I was a kid I was surrounded by old women who pissed on the ground, my mother once advised her niece to never shoot at her husband with a higher caliber than a .22, my first car had hay in the back seat, and the nearest church to our house had an all Down’s Syndrome Holy Family for their Christmas pageant while half the congregation wore camouflage. Just two weeks ago I went to a family reunion where an 85 year old preacher in a jumpsuit standing in an open air tabernacle asked God to heal his pit bull’s infection from an amateur castration. All things considered, I think I’ve inherited the right to use the term. :rolleyes:

BTW, on that same footage he rips his sons a new one, saying basically that they’re too stupid and sorry to work for money and instead chose to get $6000 from National Enquirer because that’s a fortune to them and they can’t see beyond next month when the money’s gone. That part I think he pretty much nails with some accuracy- the son who sold that tape probably could have sold it to his dad (and possibly A&E- they were making a lot of money from the show) for a helluva lot more.

ETA: And if Dog (an ex-con with a mullet, 14 kids, and a wife with jugs the size of watermelons who doesn’t wear a bra) isn’t white-trash, then the term was coined for naught.

In order for it to be racist, it would have to refer to all members of a given race. “White trash” refers to a specific class and subculture, not to any physical traits. It is lame for white people to try to pretend that it belongs in the same category as racial epithets like “nigger” or “kike.” “White trash” has never been a term used by non-whites to degrade caucasians. It’s a term used by white people to disparage poor white people. I would not deny that it’s classist, but calling it racist is ridiculous. There is no word for white people which is equivalent to “nigger,” and that’s all there is to it.

As to the OP, it might be kind of silly but I think it maybe does show a degree of genuine remorse. I think the Dog might actually be capable of some real self-examination and conscience. Still, the idea does evoke an unintentionally humorous image of a redneck bounty hunter being positioned to chase the spirits of expired slaves back to Africa.

That much probably is true. I was once told by a racist grandmother in Lousiana that “white trash” referred to “white people who live like niggers.” It’s definitely demeaning and I don’t doubt that it orginaly denoted a sort of “fallen” racial status, but it has never been intended as an anti-white slur. I also think that the meaning has involved to generally encompass behavior and mentality as much or more than economic status (I doubt that Dog is poor).
