Did the report that Iraq gave the UN really have gaps in it about WMD? Did Iraq show that it had disarmed?
bump
Well it is impossible to say that at this poinst, since the UN inspections team didn’t receive the time to finish its inquiries.
As for what Mr. Hans Blix thinks about it this moment: The last I heard of him was that he at this moment have serious doubts about Iraq having posessed any of those weapons the USA claims it has.
You can find his reports to the UN at the UN website .
Aldebaran.
The report (or “declaration”) was required by Resolution 1441 last year. The US and the UK after examination deemed it a duplicate of an earlier declaration, from 1998 or so, with very few new items of interest added since the time of the last resolution and many questions still unanswered. Blix reiterates those claims in his report to the UN here, mentions that more “question marks” have been added over time, but is also careful to note that (like the title says) he is “unable to confirm or disprove Iraq’s weapons declaration.”
One example from his text: "While in most cases issues are outstanding because there is a lack of supporting evidence, in a few cases, there is information in our possession that would appear to contradict Iraq’s account. At this point, I will only mention that there are indications suggesting that Iraq’s account of its production and unilateral destruction of anthrax during the period between 1988 and 1991, may not be accurate. On this matter, we shall certainly ask Iraq to provide explanations and further evidence."
This is all regarding Iraq showing that it had disarmed. It’s the proof of this that is missing, thus “gaps.”
Several times Blix mentions the Amorim report of 1999. Other “question marks” are revealed in there in a similar fashion.
