Really? That surprises me —it didn’t strike me as being all that complicated, other than the “sneaking in on helicopters” part. Certainly it had nothing on the Israeli raid on Entebbe. Could you explain more?

Did the President at least bring the SEAL members who were in the raid home? Because I believe President Roosevelt ordered the six soldiers who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima home but by the time he ordered three of the soldiers had already died in battle.
If he did bring them home (and there would be no real reason to), I doubt he’d tell the Press about it.
Why would anyone bring them home? That’s their job. There’s no “congratulations, you killed a bad guy, you get to retire now.”
So, all of your up in arms that this is Obama’s fault would be happy to provide cites of your outrage against President Bush from June 28, 2005, when A U.S. helicopter sent to rescue the men was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, killing all 16 aboard. It was the worst single-day death toll for U.S. forces in Afghanistan at that time. It was chronicled in Lone Survivor, by former SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who was the only survivor.

I have no way of knowing (since we don’t know who they are), but I would think they’d refuse that kind of special treatment. None of the SEALs who were killed in this recent crash were involved in the Bin Laden raid. They were said to be in the same unit.
If they had been, do you think the government would say so?

And if some had been, that would be our official position, too. So, to me, it’s worthless.
And it doesn’t even matter anyway. Whether or not any of the ObL killing SEALs was in that copter, Obama was not responsible for their deaths any more than he is for any other military person in Afghanistan.
I have to ask. Why would you suggest this? SEALS aren’t looking to get out, seeing the hell they went through just to get in.
Yes, and the surviving flag-raisers went on War Bond tours and whatnot to raise morale. Bringing back SEALs just to keep them anonymous serves no comparable purpose. It is more rational to keep them in country until their regular tours are up and rotate them back as normal.
It costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time to train a seal… There was no reason to bring them home to sit anonymously in a barracks somewhere.
So he can claim that Obama is a heartless bastard for not rewarding the successful SEAL team the way some other, presumably better president would have if he were in the same situation.
I would imagine the response to such an offer would be “Sir, fuck no, sir!”
Like others, I don’t see what difference it makes, but presumably someone had them brought home because Obama was able to meet with some of them on American soil.
