I haven’t heard squat about the Winter Olympics except that Vancouver is low on snow. This made me wonder when are they starting? And, this made me realize you just don’t see the Olympics promoted like they used to. So, have they forgotten to advertise?
Just saw the torch being carried through downtown Vancouver today, so it’s still happening. Starts up for real next week.
You can watch the torch relay live right now here.
It’s been heavily advertised here in Canada.
Tomorrow night is the opening ceremony. (Please see pit thread “Piss off Arnold”)
I can’t say more here without swearing, so I’ll leave it at that.
I just said to my wife upon seeing a promo, “Great, eleven days of sports I don’t care about performed by people I’m not interested in”. Do you think more advertising would make me watch?
If you watch NBC programming the advertising has been pretty prominent, especially during football games.
I’d reckon it’s not advertised on non-NBC networks at all, for obvious reasons.
I would ordinarily be of the same opinion as you, but I am almost (note I said almost) tempted to watch some of the skiing simply because the weather and snow (or lack thereof) conditions have been so crappy. Might be interesting to bet on whether someone ends up bouncing down the ski hill after hitting a bare patch.
PS Yes, I know they are trucking in snow (saw it on the news). I’m still dubious.
I thought it was just me. I didn’t know there were any Winter Olympics this year let alone where they were until about a day and a half ago. I was about to call the neurologist although I thought it was because I don’t really watch much TV. Americans have a reputation for not caring about sports in some far-flung place they have never heard of so that probably explains the lack of advertising dollars devoted to it.
I am sick and tired of the Olympics and they haven’t even started yet! Coverage here in BC has been quite heavy.
Yup. It’s a good 40 minutes from America. You’d have to be a far-flinger to have flung that far.
Hi neighbor! Where are you? I can’t even get to the grocery store without running down half of Switzerland.
Sorry if you had money riding on Switzerland - things don’t look good.
Yup, someone hasn’t been watching NBC I suspect.
I was gonna say NBC is the lowest rated newtork (of the big four) so unless you watch it, that would explain it.
You should have been watching the Super Bowl on a Canadian feed. I said it elsewhere on these boards, but I’ll repeat it here: while Americans got the famous and fun and interesting Super Bowl commercials, we in Canada were treated to nonstop Olympic commercials featuring our Olympic athletes, for whom we are supposed to cheer. Frankly, after that plus the glut of similar ads we’ve had over the past year, I’m almost ready to cheer for the USA, just out of spite.
I love the Winter Olympics. My favorite. But they never seem to show my beloved ski jumping. All I remember getting last Olympiad was the highlights. Maybe they’ll have it live this year.
In the same universe that hasn’t mentioned El Nino during the biggest El Nino winter in years, the Winter Olympics are going unadvertised.
But only there.
Are we supposed to be in an El Nino this year? Because I thought that that involved warmer air, and thus less snow.
No, El Nino moves the jet stream, bringing colder Canadian air down to the south and then east, which is what has been causing the series of storms this winter. As detailed in this thread.
I Am So Sick Of The @#$%&! OLYMPICS!!!
Sorry, was I shouting?
Today the torch passed within metres of where I work and did I sneak out? Oh hell no. Couldn’t be bothered. I might slide off to Holland Park to see Randy Bachman at the free shows but that’s about it.
I’ve had ten freakin’ years worth of hype and the best thing about the whole show will be the final minute of closing ceremonies!
It’s been warmer than usual for most of the winter here in the upper left coast.[sup]1[/sup] It’s also been fairly dry and the snowpacks in the mountains are lower than desirable. (But not a drought, as someone said in another thread.) However, in the past couple days it’s been a bit cooler and they’ve gotten some snow in the mountains. Probably not really enough for the Olympics, but that’s why they’ve been trucking in some snow.
[sup]1[/sup] The upper left coast includes Vancouver where the games are to be held.
