You rang?

My youngest child attends speech therapy, due to not talking at all. Actually, that’s not quite accurate. Four months ago he had two words that he said, ever. Now he’s got maybe a couple of hundred. So…
Did it help? Hell yeah
Does he like going?. Well, when the therapist comes to get us he runs off into the room ahead of us, so I’d say that was a yes.
Do you think his speech would have self-corrected if you had never gone?. Probably eventually. But when you’ve got a three year old with a development delay, you don’t want to wait for eventually.
Lionne
I never had to worry about that since I’m from MA.
I also get told I have pretty good speech for a deafie. Just tell people you’re from Boston!
Did you go to public (i.e., a speech therapist provided by your school) or private (your parents took you off campus to a private speech therapist)?
I went to public school and had speech therapy for 8 years.
What did you do during speech therapy?
When I did, it was with 3-4 other kids and we either played a game or read from a book.
Did it help?
No, it didn’t help. Then again, 5 minutes of anything wouldn’t be helpful.
Did you like going?
Not really.
How did you feel about leaving class?
It was a break.
Are you glad you did it?
No. When I got into high school, the therapist called me in and asked if I thought anymore therapy would help. I said no and that was that.
Do you think your speech would have self-corrected if you had never gone?
Yes. It’s what I did as the methods the therapists used didn’t work.
Did you go to public (i.e., a speech therapist provided by your school) or private (your parents took you off campus to a private speech therapist)?
Public school, maybe second grade? I had the ‘R’ pwoblem. I remember hearing my voice for the first time on a cheap tape recorder; I was mortified.
What did you do during speech therapy?
The only thing I specifically remember is calling out colors of flashcards held by the therapist.
Did it help?
I dunno. I can do the Rs now, but I’m unsure if that is a result of speech class.
Did you like going?
Not really, I was embarrassed being singled out.
How did you feel about leaving class?
See answer above.
Are you glad you did it?
I guess so.
Do you think your speech would have self-corrected if you had never gone?
I have no way of knowing that.
Yes. I had trouble with th and r. When I tried to say “three” it came out “fwee”, an example I specifically remember. I was 5 or 6 at the time.
