Hello everyone. I love this place so much. As you can see my post count is low but I have been around awhile. I s’pose you could call me a lurker but I don’t see it that way. I just enjoy reading everyone else’s posts. I have learned so much these last couple of years. I have changed my opinion on a few things as well.
The reason I am posting is (aside from the few cocktails ) is I really don’t know why I am so enthralled with this place.
I am so different from 99% of all you guys, yet I feel so at home here.
Here’s how it all started…
For years here I have been reading about “The Princess Bride”, well, I finally rented it and, well, colour me underwhelmed. I was so looking forward to this wonderful experience and, well, it was just a childrens film as far as I’m concerned.
Next, “Sideways”. Man, that sucked. And I was so looking forward to it. Then, “Garden State”. So-so. And I had to drive two hours to the cinema to see it. (a year late too!). God, I hate living in a small Irish town.
I was just wondering…are there any other dopers like me…you are very conservative, yet open minded…like Bush and aren’t afraid to say so…think America is going to hell in a hand-basket…and I think I had better stop before I say too much and no one will want to meet me at the San Antonio Dopefest I hope to organize when my husband finally gets his visa!!! That’s it.
well, I think America is going to hell in a handbasket (but probably not for the same reasons you do)
Also, I really didn’t like “Princess Bride” on first viewing, but for some reason ended up seeing it several other times, and it really grew on me, to the point where my husband and I could probably perform the whole thing for audiences (possible profession when this handbasket reaches its terminus?) Give it another chance if you have time
The book was so wonderful that I awaited the film in all eagerness and was disappointed initially. I grew to like it more and and now own it. I never saw it as a children’s film.
Well, the meat and potatoes of the OP is about a film (and a few others), so I’ll move it to Cafe Society. If it strays elsewhere, the Mods there might boot it right back here.
TPB is one of those strange movies that grow on you the more you watch it. I just thought it a cute but unmemorable movie at first. Then I saw it again on TV years later and enjoyed it. Maybe it’s just one of those movies that wears well when you watch it. I wouldn’t say it was my favorite movie of all time, but most of the movies I really like, I can’t stand to watch more than once. I don’t own hardly any dvds for that reason. For example, I bought the entire Monty Pythons flying circus video collection of their TV show. I’ve watched it once, and tried to watch some of it again, but I just couldn’t get interested.
I’ve tried to watch “The Princess Bride” twice. Both times I fell asleep. The second time I was sick so that was probably why, but the first time I had no excuse other than boredom. I suppose I ought to try to watch it all the way through and see if it gets better, but I’m not in any hurry.
All my gamer-geek friends love this movie, tell me how good it is, and quote from it way too much. I just don’t get it.
I love The Princess Bride. I get so into the action on the screen that whenever they go back to present-day, with the grandfather reading the story to his grandson, I have a moment of, “Wha… ? Oh, yeah.”
You want to know what movie I don’t get? (There just happens to be a thread about it; right under this one as I opened it) Rocky Horror Picture Show. I know it’s a cult classic, and you’re not really supposed to “get it,” you’re supposed to dress up and know all the lines and perform along with the characters, but holy cow it’s a dumb movie. I just don’t get the hype.
I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
All that aside, I read the book recently, after having heard so very much about the movie, and I got the movie from Netflix, and never finished it. It’s just boring.
Well, Rocky Horror is supposed to be absurdly bad. It succeeds.
I loved The Princess Bride from the first time I saw it, but it was years ago and I’d heard no hype beforehand. I wasn’t expecting to like it when it was suggested but it’s a fun movie. I haven’t met many people who have seen it and don’t like it.
Perhaps The Princess Bride was so hyped that it didn’t live up to the expectations of bigdfrombigd. I’ve seen similar posts from people who finally saw Casablanca or Citizen Kane and were underwhelmed after hearing so many great things about them. I’d recommend that bigdfrombigd see it again after a while. It may grow on her.
I first saw the Princess Bride when I was eleven and hadn’t heard of it before. I was captured. I’ve seen it more times than any other movie. There’s nothing to be explained as far as I can tell - I could wax on about the excellent ensemble cast (I can hardly think of any other movie with a large cast that’s as consistently good as that one) or the great writing, but if you’ve seen it and don’t like it, well, nothing to be done I suppose.
But Rocky Horror - part of it is the ridiculousness. But a lot of it is the music. As a movie, plotwise and such, it’s nothing. But as a musical? It’s got great music. If you don’t like the music, you probably won’t see why it’s so good.
Actually, “inconceivable” is quite a prominent quote from the movie. I don’t think Stark Raven Mad had a problem with the definition of the word; you’ve accidentally missed the context.
I enjoy TPB. Liked it the first time I saw it, seen it several times since, like watching it with my kids. They like it too. It’s not going to get the Oscar, sure, but I do like a film where things are allowed to turn out happily every once in a while. Besides, Cary Elwes is dishy.
I don’t get The Princess Bride either. Or Rocky Horror Picture Show. Haven’t seen Sideways, or Garden State. I also think I’m open minded. I suppose 2 out of 6 agreement with the OP isn’t all that unalike.
