Dido’s “If My Life Is For Rent” -
Not really “getting” this song. What exactly is the message here?
I’m constantly pushing people away/unable to commit, and now I’m alone. huh.
Yeah, not truly living your life if you choose not to commit to something for whatever reason.
And I really like Dido, but this isn’t a great song.
First off, love me some Dido. That album (“Life For Rent”) and the one that preceded it “No Angel” are both just outstanding albums.’’
Now to the song. I have always thought it was about the singer wanting to (or regretting not) taking control,or ownership, of her life. Stop coasting through life. If you don’t take control, you just let things happen to you. That is “renting” the life experience. Much of the song deals with thinking about how she wanted things to be, and regretting that they have not worked out that way.
