So what’s the straight dope on this? You can have all these varieties, but don’t you dare actually use them. Reminds me of “Mother, may I go out to swim?” “Yes, my darling daughter. Hang your clothes on a hickory branch… but don’t go near the water!”

I think it’s pretty clear that he was. There is no rule against changing the font. I think it’s godawful annoying, just like fetus does, but there’s no rule against it.
This font has been changed by the Fontist. 
Personally I do not have a problem with posts in different font unless somebody uses wing dings. Using a different font is not anoying, what I did above is very anoying.

The fonts and colors and what-not codes, like spoilers and quote tags, are provided for people to use as they see fit. “Seeing fit” means recognizing that there are some people who will object. Heck, there are some people who will object to the sun coming up in the east.
I think that common courtesy suggests that one not use colors and font sizes to be annoying to others. However, that’s simple good manners. And what’s annoying to one person may be merely blinding to others.
