For the love of god! Won’t someone FedEx me a muffeletta?
I always end up a couple of times at the German restaurant.
Not sure of the name. Schwartz? Anyway, the AAA book says it’s been there forever.
I don’t pretend to be an expert, but Mrs. Rocketeer and I were in NO a couple years ago–

We got into a conversation with an old fella who runs a little tiny Civil War memorabilia shop in the Quarter. He recommended several greasy-spoon type places, and we were very happy at all of them.

We had simply wonderful po-boys at a place called “John & Joyce’s” (I think) east and north of the Chalmette battlefield park. We asked the rangers at the park where they’d recommend eating. They said that they weren’t supposed to recommend places…so we asked them to discuss where to have lunch, so we could eavesdrop. They laughed, and said that “John & Joyce’s” was the place to go. Apparently John is a fisherman, and the seafood is very very fresh. Ask for your po-boy “all the way” --that’s “with the works” to us Seattleites…
For meals other than your big splurge, I highly recommend the roast beef or oyster po’boys at Mothers. IIRC, it is on Tchopitoulous (I know that is misspelled, but it’s close!).
Jack Dempsey’s is soooooooooooo good, but it is way off in the middle of these dark quarter streets… but it is SO good… not all that expensive either. A cabbie could take you. That’s the thing, if you go there a few times, you can find places to eat that don’t totally break you.
Copeland’s is not in the quarter, and has recently expanded to several other cities. But go to the original if you can. Too, too yum.
Of course, the best new year’s eve eats on the planet can be found at your local lucky dog stand… mmmm… so good with a screwdriver…
Go to the mint, just on esplanade. It is a predominantly gay bar, but go, even if that bothers you. Get a Separator. It is the best drink ever. Then hop on over to the French Market to shop. Around the Mint there is Paisley Babylon and Boomerang, great clothes shops. There is so much more… sigh… I miss that place so much.
Oooooh! I prefer the baked ham, myself. Fully dressed. And DON’T let them forget the “debris.”
Another vote for K-Paul’s. Although I liked his sister Enid’s restaurant (in their hometown of Lafayette) better.
Ukulele Ike mentioned red beans and rice at Mothers. Very good, and try a ferdie at Mothers if you get the chance. A little advise for anyone visiting N.O. (I live in Algiers - GO SAINTS) spend some time in the quarter its nice but please don’t think that you have to spend a mint on good food. The Westbank has many great places to eat (J&K, New Orleans Food & Spirits, Red Maple to name a few) and out in Metairie, for Ukulele Ike, Smilies has red beans and rice that will make you want to stay here (**served everyday). Its a shame that most tourists have to spend a small fortune on food in the quarter when most of it isn’t what made N.O. famous. ** red beans & rice is traditionally served on Mondays only
