Arranged marriages may involve a wide range of coercion, from zero up to just before force.
The term “arranged marriages” is commonly used to cover this entire range.
I suggest that we each choose the point in this range we are personally most used to observing or hearing about, and argue that the term can only ever refer to this point.
I say that “arranged marriages” refer only to situations where the parents arrange a marriage between kids based on monetary factors, and the kids are able to veto the marriage only at the risk of being sent to bed without supper for a week. The term does not apply if the threat is for any other length of time.
