DirecTV Questions

I Hate DirecTV. I have had it for a few months now, and what I thought would be a learning curve has turned into ongoing frustrations.

  1. When I change channels the channels go backwards, alot. That is, I will start on channel 309, press down 3 times go past 306 and arrive back at 308 even though I never press the up button. What gives here?

2.The “Active” channel takes FOREVER to load with the 5 day forcast and most popular shows features. What do you advise?

3.The tuner sometimes tunes into the On Demand channel by itself. Why?
In short, why is DirecTV that much more crappy in terms of interface, as compared to Dish Network?

DirecTV has an On Demand feature? Mine doesn’t, or if it does, I don’t know how to access it.

My Active channel loaded in less than a minute. No problems with the channel Up/Down button.

Sorry I can’t help. I’ve had no problems with DirecTV except that sometimes we have to reset one of the receivers for no discernible reason. Their Customer Service is pretty good. Give 'em a call.

1 and 3 sound like you’ve maybe got a defective remote. I don’t have either of those problems. I can’t help you with 2, I don’t ever use that channel.

I think the “Active” channel is sort of a trick, in that your box knows where you live and the Active Channel receives forcasts for every location DirecTV serves. It then just chooses the forecast for your area to show you. I think this is a new feature - we only noticed it a little while ago and I’ve had DirecTV for maybe 10 years or more.

Mrs. Napier says that, recently, channel numbers have been changing by twos. I wouldn’t know, as she always takes the remote.

Overall we’ve been very happy with it, and visitors who have cable say they think our service is better.

I agree that it sounds like a defective remote.

I’ve had DTV for 4 years and my only two complaints are:

The response time of the remote is sometimes slow, although that is getting betterwith the newer equipment.

My dish is on top of my house, so if there is wet sticky snow I loose reception.

Many things about DTV are great.
The channels are organized logically-all the ESPN’s are in order, all the Discovery-type channels are near each other. On cable. you never know where the channels are going to be.
Having used Time Warner’s DVR, the DTV is so much better. Organization of show by show. rather than record date.

The on demand service is beta and you need to connect it to your DSL modem or cable modem. Since it is beta they don’t advertise it but you can use it for free for now.

I had one of my remotes start acting weird last week. I could see the light blinking on the box indicating that it was receiving the remote signal, but it wasn’t doing anything with certain buttons.

I rebooted the box. There’s a little door on the lower right hand side of the front of the box. Press the little red button in there and give it a minute to reset itself. That seems to fix everything every time I have any kind of problem.

My DVR starts to have all sorts of trouble every few months and I have to reboot it. The other box had never been rebooted in the 2 years I’ve had it.
