Dirk was important in the first novel, but very much a secondary character. MacDuff was the main protagonist, and very much the lens through which we see the amazing story all come together.

I can’t say I agree with your criticisms. I thought the “holistic” thing was pretty integral to the story and from what I remember Dirk wasn’t always the central character in the novel. To each his own though. But I had to ask what you mean by the part I quoted: you seem to be implying Vancouver is full of Brits or Britishisms. Vancouver is about a million times more like Seattle than any British city.

I looked over what I wrote and I see no basis for saying that I thought Vancouver* is British like. None whatsoever. The “loss” is from not filming in the UK.

• Now if they filmed in Victoria, at least it would look like the UK.

This was a production of BBC America, not the BBC. There was no reason to film in the UK.

But it was set in Seattle. Last time I checked Seattle was nowhere near the UK nor did it look anything like any place in the UK.

Just admit you’re mad they didn’t film the books and let it go.

You said they should have just set it in Vancouver but then you’d lose the charm of all the Britishisms Dirk plays against. How was anyone supposed to interpret that as “they should have set it in the UK”?

Um. You missed not just a sentence break but an emphatic phrase separating the two.

"Just call in [sic] Vancouver BC and be done with it. But then you lose an immense amount of charm … "
