Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016 BBC Series)

What exactly did the note say? I watched at a friend’s, and should have asked to go back and pause it at the note, but between the blood on it and the bad handwriting, I never quite made it out.

Is it really over? At the end Tod picked up a flyer off the street. It was for a Lux Dujour tribute concert and included the text “We will never let you go”. Were the writers telling us something? Was the universe trying to tell Tod something?

Even paused I couldn’t read it. All I could make out was the “Shit [something] Dirk Gently” at the end.

Sorry
Went bad
Tried but same way
Wrote this last (smudged)
Shit
Dirk Gently

That’s what I got.

I like this explanation. What I thought at the time was that maybe she really does need to kill Dirk, but, not yet.

It reminded me of a portion of the Hitchhiker’s Guide wherein a spirit kidnaps Arthur with the intention of killing him in revenge for all of the many instances in which Arthur had killed him… (It’s a complex story.) But, the spirit grabs Arthur too soon - before he’d committed the most important crimes. So, if the spirit killed Arthur, he’d be dead & unable to commit the crimes for which the spirit was seeking revenge. Therefore, the revenge would be unwarranted, and so forth.

Oh no, not again.

The new Dirk Gently on Netflix claims to be based on the original books. There was an original BBC radio production that is no longer shown on the BBC web site that contained this exact story of dirks time travel with the men of the machine and the hammer-head shark cat. Seems BBC and Netflix copy pasted the entire radio drama for this new production and didn’t credit the original source material. (not from the books at all). My friends couldn’t believe it as we already knew all the best quotes and the ending before the show aired on Netflix. It would be nice for BBC to stop covering up this interesting fact. Anyone else remember that radio drama featuring the female assassin who is “a leaf in the stream of creation, until she finds who shes looking for and becomes a piranha in the stream of creation”? My friend still has the audio recording of this and playing it while watching the Netflix version is identical in every way. My question is why not credit this radio drama as it is NOT an original script! Seems Max Landis just exploited an obscure radio drama. :smack:

Dirk Gently is one of the best detective series of all time. With that being said, I was excited to discover when watching the new Netflix adaptation included characters already established in the dirk universe.
As the show progressed my friends watching this with me were able to quote upcoming moments in the show and predict the ending as we have herd this story before.

Any thoughts or insight into where i can find the original audio story on the inter-webs would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the 2007 BBC Radio adaptation? BBC Radio 4 - Comedy - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Home Page

It appears to be adaptations of the Dirk Gently books and not related to the current series plot line at all.

Not only that, it is currently impossible to watch Dirk Gently on Netflix. They don’t have any.

Someone’s either very confused or establishing a valid persona prior to spamming.

It’s on Netflix, except for the US where its is on BBC America (and others).

See http://www.bbcamerica.com/shows/dirk-gentlys-holistic-detective-agency/where-to-watch

This program was an original production from BBC America and Netflix. It’s not imported from the BBC or any of the other UK channels.

He’s claiming that the BBC America production ripped off an earlier BBC Radio production without giving them credit. But there’s no evidence of any early adaptation with this story line so I think his complaint amounts to bupkis.

Okay, that makes sense.

Alternate theory: “Todd” has already seen the series and recorded the audio to mess with Dirk while both are binge watching.

I know I’m late to this party, but I loved the show as well and noticed the jacket changing from yellow to green to blue as the series went on. I figured I’d come here to get the answer, but no luck. So, I actually found the answer myself!

According to Landis, his jacket gets more reserved as the situation around him gets crazier and crazier.

(This is practically the first time that I found something that hasn’t already been answered by someone smarter and quicker than me on this board. I’m feeling pretty full of myself right now!)

Great show! Can’t wait for season 2.

Thank you! Bothered me, since some said it wasnt.

We tried watching this series. Got as far as the 2nd episode and had to stop. Egad.

I see that the “this is not Dirk Gently” bit got mentioned in the first page of this thread.

This is the number 1 problem by far. This reminds me of those listicles about movie scripts for one franchise that got re-purposed into scripts for entirely different ones.

Someone had some scripts for a series. A producer suggested that if was a Dirk Gently series it might sell better. Dirk got tacked onto it (very badly). All references to whatever the original was about got changed into “holistic” and this is the crap you get.

I can see why giving Dirk an assistant gives Dirk someone to explain things to out loud. It almost worked in the other version. Making the assistant the lead character? What the what???

They decided to save money filming in Vancouver, decided to call it Seattle. Why? Just call in Vancouver BC and be done with it. But then you lose an immense amount of charm concerning all the weird Britishisms that Dirk plays against. Dirk is not like those other Brits is a key aspect of the stories.

It might be okay if you have never heard of Dirk Gently before and you wanted a lot of gore instead of whimsy.

(We had watched the other Dirk Gently series about a month ago and mostly enjoyed it. Stephen Mangan was a really good choice. This new series …, again: egad.)

I can’t say I agree with your criticisms. I thought the “holistic” thing was pretty integral to the story and from what I remember Dirk wasn’t always the central character in the novel. To each his own though. But I had to ask what you mean by the part I quoted: you seem to be implying Vancouver is full of Brits or Britishisms. Vancouver is about a million times more like Seattle than any British city.

Yeah. I didn’t understand the Vancouver remark either.
