I just started watching, and I love this show beyond words. The political situation in America has been getting me down and this is exactly what I needed.
I’d like to chime in with my appreciation for Brad Dourif’s daughter. She has the same crazy mop of red hair and the same unhinged demeanor.
I enjoyed seeing the two female leads Farah Black and Bart Curlish both being strong, mission oriented, driven people. Whereas, both male leads, Todd Brotzman and Dirk Gently are both wandering, floundering people. Even the male military people are idiots (one more than the other) who report to a strong female character.
Reminds of many a game of Sid Meier’s Civilization II.
I really enjoyed the season finale. I enjoyed the tying of everything up and how every (sort of) made sense in the end. I especially was surprisingly moved by Dirk and Todd, while on the edge of dying, trying as hard as they could to send the time machine back and close the loop… in order to save Lydia’s existence.
I am intrigued by the direction they are going in, but I wonder if that means there is no more mysteries next year… which would be sad.
Bart throws the rock into the tank barrel. It fires. It explodes, wiping out all of the soldiers but strangely leaving Bart and Ken unharmed. Like 3 seconds total plus 5 seconds of the two of them just looking at each other and then driving off.
Next we see Dirk running wildly from Stupid Guy. He crosses a street in hot pursuit, only to get hit by an ambulance. The one carrying Estevez to the hospital because he’s still alive.
If Dirk and Bart are both Special People, there are echoes of Fringe and Orphan Black to be heard. Add in some Special Tools and we’ll have us some Warehouse 13 as well.
Although I liked all of those shows, I, personally, would prefer echoes of Douglas Adams’ works to augment the Mysteries.
Great way to end the season. I’ve been waiting for the military to return, after the woman in charge put the young, aggressive, idiot officer Friedkin in control. Pretty hard to say whether they’ll dismiss this whole thing quickly or if it’ll be a central part of the next season. I hope it’s a background issue, and a new wacky case comes along instead.
Bummer about Estevez, I liked him. Why did Friedkin apologize for shooting him? He always intended to kill him once he showed up. I like that Farah is aboard as the muscle of agency, of course it has to be reassembled. Whatever happens with Bart and Ken shouldn’t be shown on camera. It’s better as a mystery, either way. The Rowdy three took on a whole bunch of SWAT guys, they could take on the military as well.
Friedkin apologized for shooting Estevez because he would have shot his own reflection in the window. His dim witted brain hadn’t gotten anywhere close to remembering he was *supposed *to shoot him.
I didn’t mind Estevez getting shot. He was becoming a little too crazy himself. I liked his old Jewish partner better.
I also liked that Todd and Amanda didn’t patch things up at the end. Their relationship is changed in a fundamental way, and it will be a long time if ever before she forgives him. But she did call him when the shit hit the fan, triggering his first attack of the disease so maybe they’re on their way to mending the relationship.
Loved the look on Ken’s face when he realized that he needed to be there in order to fix the machine. Bart’s reaction to the whole scene was spot on - no need to soften her character and become normal. She’s still a wack job with a purpose.
The shootout scene in the house with automatic weapons hitting absolutely nothing left me a little cold. All those bullets and no one got hit? I can understand Gordon Rimmer not hitting anything but Farah and Estevez (although he seemed still drunk) should have been a bit better. Not sure about throwing the dog and throwing the gun; why didn’t Estevez just shoot Rimmer in the back once he’d dropped his gun to catch the dog? He didn’t need to throw the gun to Farah to shoot Rimmer in the head. And Rimmer would have been a cool character to still follow but I’m glad the whole Men of the Machine storyline is over.
I was hoping that the reveal at the end was that Friedkin was far more competant than we’ve been led to believe, but I guess that does tend to run into the narrative themes of the show (that no one has any idea what they are doing).
The only messages from the universe she ever received were about killing people. She never considered that the message would have another meaning. Ken helped her understand that while her primary mission seems to be to kill people who deserve killing, that’s not her only purpose.
