Dirty Dozen - The Movie

Ok… a somewhat pathetic question, but one that bugs me none the less. I just finished watching the Dirty Dozen. All the deaths of the Dozen get some amount of play, depending upon the importance of the character… but a couple just seem to disappear, particularly Posey and Bravos (Donald Duck at the crossroads… whatever that meant, too). Also Gilpin on the roof (but I assume he blew himself up). It smacked of some editing for length. Is there a directors cut? Has someone seen the director’s cut? What happend to Posey, Bravos, and Gilpin? What the hell was the Donald Duck stuff about?
Thanks

You saw it on TV? sure it was edited for time and content.

IIRC, Posey is the character played by Telly Sevalas, right? If so, what happened is that he ‘lost sight’ of the mission, grabbed a girl, who screamed, stabbed her (I think), and then Jim Brown came into the scene realized that Posey was going nuts and jeopardizing the mission, and shot him.

No no, Posey was the really big hick who couldn’t read. Rememeber the knife fight where the Major says “posey, if you learn to control that temper of yours, no one will ever be able to take that knife away from you”.

But I don’t remember how he died.

ok. right. gotcha. Beats me. sorry.

While the assault is being planned, a figurine of Donald was placed on the scale model to represent the lookouts’ position at the crossroads. Haven’t seen the movie in a while, and only on TV, but Posey and Bravos, if they were the lookouts, were probably killed in the gunfight toward the end. No idea as to what happened to Gilpin.

I’ve been watching this thread sink all day long. C’mon, somebody’s gotta know the answer to this.

I’m giving it a bump.

I seem to remember the German mini-tank-thing (the car with dual machine guns mounted on top) shooting the two lookouts as it drove past them. One thing that I’ve wondered about: At the end, there are four guys in the halftrack: Maj. Riceman, the part-Cherokee guy, and two other guys. One of the other guys gets shot by a German from behind, and the other other guy returns fire as the scene fades out. What happens to this last guy? The concluding monologue says that only Riceman and the Native American guy survived, and the sequel also says that only one of the first Dozen survived. What happened to Cannon Fodder #11?

Native American? (I think it’s a misused term BTW. I’m a native American. I was born here and so were my parents and 3/4 of my grandparents. I am however not an aboriginal American) The three left at the end were Reisman (Lee Marvin), Wladislaw (Charles Bronson, playing a Polish American) and Sgt. Bowren I think.

The four guys in the halftrack were Reisman (Marvin), Bowren (the MP), Wladislaw (Bronson), and Franco (Cassavettes). Franco is the one who gets killed, and Wladislaw gets wounded, as does Reisman. Major Reisman and the MP were not part of the actual dirty dozen. He picked 12 convicts that he and the MP led. So the only surviving convict was Wladislaw. As Padeye said, he was Polish, not A. Indian.

Just for some interesting sideline trivia, the first one to get killed (I can’t remember his name) was the guy who broke his neck during the air drop. He originally was scripted for the entire movie, but felt he should have had a more “starring” role. He whined to a friend, Frank Sinatra, who even then had a lot of clout, who told him to simply demand a bigger role and mention that he supported it. So the guy did just that. The director (Aldrich) was not impressed with him or Sinatra and that night, wrote him out of the rest of the script and the next morning of shooting told the guy to go home.

POSEY—played by CLINT WALKER was the part Indian one.
the MP–played by RICHARD JAECKEL.
TELLEY–played MAGGOTT.
Correct, BRONSON’S character is the only on of “the dozen” who survives.
The one who died in the parachute drop was JIMINEZ—played by singer/entertainer TRINI LOPEZ.
FRANCO/CASSAVETES is the one in the half track that gets shot from behind just as he’s “celebrating”. MARVIN’S the one that grabs the mounted machine gun and blasts away.

In my estimation only BRONSON, CASSAVETES and BROWN were actually meant to be the major ones. As we all know, the ever lovely DONALD SUTHERLAND’S “PINKLEY”'s role was enlarged during filming.

I’ll watch the movie tomorrow and check back here to see if detailed answers are still needed.

Great movie. War or any other genre.

Great reply’s… thanks a lot

Great reply’s… thanks a lot
BTW does anyone know who Cassavettes lost out to for the best supporting actor oscar that year?

IIRC, George Kennedy won it for Cool Hand Luke.

Here’s the scoop folks—

In order of their “incident”—

1–JIMINEZ/TRINI—already established.
-----MAGGOTT kills the girl----then starts blasting—this starts the chaos--------
2–GILPIN–established–on the roof
3–PINKLEY/SUTHERLAND—in front of chateau–HE’D started shooting.
4–MAGGOTT/TELLY----by BROWN/JEFFERSON–in the house.
5–VLADEC–right between the eyes, from the house, while he’s helping the now wounded BOWREN/JAECKEL.
6–BRONSON now WOUNDED running to half track----
7–BROWN/JEFFERSON----finished dropping the grenades, running to half track.
8–?? (the little dark haired, mustashed one stationed WITH POSEY/WALKER at the Donald Duck machine gun site. Site was sprayed with machine gun fire.
9 & 10–two guys in the motor boat.
11–FRANCO/CASSAVETES—already established–in the half track. (I was wrong about MARVIN new starting to blast away. He’d been shot in the arm. Just driving now.)

MUNGO is correct—you never actually SEE (#12)POSEY get hit! One of the angles, after the spraying starts, CLEARLY shows BOTH men returning fire. The angle changes and you see ONLY the little guy getting hit.

Last scene is MARVIN, JAECKEL and BRONSON in the hospital.

This was fun! Let’s do it again some time. LOL.
