Dirty Pretty Things

I am thinking of seeing this tonight. Has anyone seen it? No spoilers, please.

I love that little Audrey Tatou.

Excellent film with people you never heard of. No car crashes, no explosions, just good film-making. A slightly implausible ending, but enjoyable.

A friend of mine wrote me this gushing review, telling me she was sitting on the edge of her seat, so I went this weekend with my SO.

He liked it more than I did. I think my problem was that I saw all the little twists coming about 5 minutes before they happened and nothing really surprised me.

That said, the acting was good, the feel for London and the life of legal and illegal immigrants was captured very well and I think all in all it was a good film.

I just didn’t think it was all that thrilling or suspenseful.

Dirty Pretty Things is definitely a thinking person’s film. It starts off a little slow, but ultimately the story draws you in. The performances are excellent (including Audrey Tautou, the reason I went to see it). I guess the most lasting impact of the movie is the way it presents the lives of immigrants and the hardships they must endure, both before and after their move. I definitely recommend it.

I enjoyed it a lot. It’s very good, developes the characters incredibly well, and is a rather interesting story. Some of the scenes with Audrey were kinda rough for me to watch, but they really help one feel for her character and feel for her and the situation she’s in. And the main character (who’s name I could never pronounce, much less spell) is absolutely excellent. Definitely go see this movie, but expect something serious.

Somehow, in the review I read, I got the impression it was a comical film. I was waaaay wrong. But there are some fun, lighthearted parts and characters, and I especially loved the Chinese doctor.

Definitely see this movie, it’s well worth the money.

Now, quick question for those who have seen it (it’s not much of a spoiler, so don’t be too concerned). What exactly was that stuff the main character was chewing all the time?

I believe it is called Kanna and is popular and grown in Africa and has to be chewed while the plant is fairly fresh. It supposedly keeps you awake and is a kind of drug that makes you happy…my guess is a mix between coffee and cannabis.

It got 93% good reviews on http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/DirtyPrettyThings-1122798/

But…I was disappointed. I agreed with those 7% who said it didn’t have any real tension.

Not a mystery, not a thriller, and every character seemed to have a specific transparent plot function.

So, I was soo glad that the person I begged to go with me couldn’t make it. I don’t need to be blamed for a flat movie.

But 93% is more than most movies, so if it interests you at all, the the odds are in your favor.

So, Indygrrl, did you go see it yet? What’d you think?
