Disability Question

It occurs to me that this might vary state by state. But here’s my question just in case someone knows all and sees all.

Let’s say I’m about to lose my job. In this case (hypothetically, of course) we’ll say it’s a contract that’s to end on Dec. 31st. But on December 13th, I claim disability. Do I get disability pay until Dec. 31st? Or until I’m actually able to work again?

Yes, I know the H.R. department should have these answers. But I figure you guys will be much quicker.

It depends on the extent of your disability and your employer’s plan. I’ve had people become disabled (sick, injured, pregnant etc.)who were scheduled for a staff reduction. If the person is disabled for 6 months or less we pay short term disablity until they’ve recovered and then the severance kicks in. Employees who are disabled for longer than 6 months are eligible for Long Term Disablity (LTD), and that can continue until age 65, or until the employee recovers under our plan. I’m an HR/Benefits Admin.

And be sure to check with your HR people. STD/LTD plans vary from company to company.
