Q: Co's Short-Term Disability Policies

I was wondering if some SDopers could share with me their Company’s policy on using Short-Term Disability (STD) for time-off due to an injury (as substantiated by a doctor). Previously, my employers would allow you to take STD after all sick leave has been used first. Granted, I chipped in to offset the cost of this benefit…and it covered 100% of your pay up to some weekly max.

But, now when I really need it, my current employer states I must be out of work for 30 days before tapping into this (free) benefit! I have no sick leave, and even if I did, it’d only be 5 days. And, it’d only cover 60%.

What’s the point? (I should add we have LDT which kicks in after the STD, but…) How many people who are honestly injured would be able to take advantage of the STD? Is this 30-day wait more common than I realize? Dying a slow death, Jinx :frowning:

P.S. Now I know why they just shoot horses…

Where I work, union members are eligible after 14 days of disability, and non-union members are eligible after 30 days. We are covered for 75% of our earnings.

In my company the STD kicks in after a week or two (I’ve never used it, so I’m not sure, but I’m pretty sure it’s one week) and the amount you’re paid depends on the length of time you’ve been employed there.
