I missed the sign up for STD at work, and I am expecting a baby in June, so I was wondering if signing up for STD on my own is worth it? I also tried looking up exactly what the cost and terms would be for me, but most companies want me to sign up and then have them call me directly, which, being a sales representative myself I don’t want t deal with the sales pitch right now. I just want facts. Thanks for you help in advance.
I’d guess getting STD on the private market would not be finanially sensible. First, I’m not sure you could buy a STD only plan, much less buy one when pregnant. Most plans pay 50% of salary, so if there were a plan, you would really have to price shop. I’d assume a company would want a one year or so commitment.
Are you going to go back to work after maternity leave? Do you have any sick time or PTO time banked? Are you in the US?
I have to keep working after the baby. I only have about 2 weeks of PTO. If I don’t work after two weeks we won’t be able to pay our insurance premiums not to mention our bills and essentials, so my boss and I worked it out that I can continue to work from home and if a client needs me to see them I can teleconference with them. I will keep the baby home with me while my twins are in kindergarten. My biggest concern is if I have to be on bed rest after the baby longer than expected for some unforeseen health complication.
Since you are already pregnant, it’s unlikely that any short-term disability insurance that you get now would cover your maternity leave. I know AFLAC won’t.
oh. I didn’t know you had to get it pre-pregnancy. I have never planned any of my pregnancies, LOL. At least I know now. Sorry for the short thread! I guess we are just going to have to hope that my job remains intact after I get back from PTO. We are having some shakeups at work and I am worried because I one of the new faces on the block and I know the new guys are usually the first on the chopping block!
Might want to be careful with acronyms. Some folks might get the idea that an STD insurance plan covered something else entirely…
I defined it before I acronym-ized it
Technically a baby could be considered an STD, LOL (Sexually Transmitted Disability)
Why is pregnancy defined as a disability for insurance purposes? I never understood that.
While it’s not an illness or injury, giving birth is something that makes it medically necessary to take some time off from work.
