I was just reading the thread in IMHO by tmaareif (which was still on the front page despite being locked earlier), and getting to page 3 found I was not entitled to read any further.
Dear Messrs and Mss Mods: I have read previously of your justification for having threads disappear into the cyberether, that having threads visible gives trolls etc their jollies. While I personally find this reasoning inadequate, I defer to your greater authority and will suck it up appropriately.
However, for fucks sake, can you at least wait a bit until the thread sinks of its own accord which should only take a couple of days at most? Seeing that there is still a thread in the Pit which references that one in IMHO, it seems abitrary and precious to vapourise the original so quickly.
And don’t you know that locked threads are the most fun to read?
Nah, I used the word ‘precious’ intentionally. In Australia, as a form of slang, (and I thought the rest of the world but I am probably mistaken) being ‘precious’ about something means taking more serious affront, or giving more credence to an issue than the issue deserves.
I appreciate your reply Frank. but I would have thought that locking threads and banning the buggers should be quite adequate. I understand that you don’t want to be feeding their demented egos by having the threads visible, but once they have dropped off the front pages, banned members can no longer ‘search’ and the threads are therefore unavailable to them.
Thus the only function this act serves is to aggravate current members who might want to spend some fun minutes (or hours) reading over controversial old threads.
Um, yeah, I DO have a life I think!
Unless the threads contain stuff that threatens the safety of the board or any of its members, I don’t think eliminating them is the right thing to do.
I do it more often than I’m comfortable with, just because I’m curious why they were closed. But I console myself by reminding myself I don’t slow down to look at car wrecks or watch NASCAR.
I don’t do those things either, guess that means we’re ok. Though it may say a little something about me that I find it disappointing when I find out a thread was only locked for being a zombie. I want drama damnit!
Hi, my name is Russell and I’m a locked threadaholic.
Worse than that, if I am browsing through a thread a find that one of the posters has been banned, I will search through their old posts to find out how they got banned.
And yes, I will read through a thread just because it is locked.
I was pretty surprised and disappointed that this one got pulled, too. I’m not doubting the mods’ evidence that he was a troll or anything, but… but… It was so much fun! Can we have it back if we’re really really good?
You are not the only one. Those little locks draw me in like a do not enter sign at the ruins of an old castle or someone telling me not to look behind the curtain.
I’m hoping for an early Christmas present of a new keyboard, that has a little lock key on it, so every morning I can open the front page of the Pit and open <Ctrl + F>, then have it find the little “locked” icons.
